I do NOT recommend upgrading to Windows Vista. I would stick with XP.

However, I don't know much about Windows 7.

After running Windows XP x64 for a very long time, I finally made the switch to Windows 7 on my main machine after a trial run on one of my secondary machines. I've been happy with it so far, and haven't found anything that won't work with it. I'm sure there are programs that will have problems with it, but none that I use :P. With its default settings, it sort of sucks, but now that I have things dialed in, I find it much faster to navigate and do basic Windows tasks than XP/2000. I also got a decent framerate boost in most games, but I don't know if I should attribute that to just being a new install of Windows, or if Windows 7 helped at all :).

Don't go Vista - you WILL have problems.

you'll find a LOT of information about windows 7 in this folder. in general, windows 7 is a really good OS. Also, the information you have about vista isn't quite right any more since SP2 came out. However, you really should just skip vista and move right to 7. 7 does everything that vista did...except it does it well and adds more to the mix.

the only warning i would give would be dependent on your system. if you're running an old computer with 1 gig of ram or something you'll find 7 to be slower than XP. however, if you have a computer that's a few years old and you have at least 2 gigs of ram i would say you'll probably be very happy with windows 7

If you search the tech talk there are many threads about the OS.

Also if this option is free and you decide not to use the OS maybe we can work something out :)

Windows 7 is very stable. When it first came out I had it on my laptop for a few months. After I realized how much better it is than vista, I then decided to put it on my desktop. It is a very good OS, and I personaly have noticed no adverse affects on my gaming.

the rc was more stable than xp from my experience so the rtm and final should be rock solid.

but if you want stable linux is the way to go

Everybody that says going to Vista will give you problems don't know what they are talking about.

However, with Windows 7 coming out in 21 days, going to Vista would be silly.

Wait till it actually releases and make sure that all the updates are still available for any programs that may require them

Windows 7 works fantastically... I have used it for months now and I haven't had one problem.. Hope this helps... my thoughts any way...

BTW I am using the computer with windows 7 to type this up....

Amen... I have never had a machine as stable as one running Debian without X :P. CLI FTW!

ya same i got a suse linux enterprise 10 box with no x and it runs for months at a time and has never crashed. than i got a openSuSE 11.1 on my main setup with kde 4.3 and never had it crash.

I am currently using Windows 7 after using XP x64 for a long time. I have had no major issues with it and I have not noticed any difference in my gaming.

I love windows 7, i will never use anything else, well unless something better is invented, which at this time there is nothing imo, xp just isn't as fun and vista was a fail, but both could be made functional. With windows 7 I haven't had anything but great things happen! I have the RTM copy now! If you are in college you can get it for like 30 dollars! which is amazing!

10 fps is a myth switching from xp to Vista, though windows 7 is quite useful.

I have used Win7 RC and loved it. I am now using a full version of Win7 (part of my schools MSDN program) It is way better than Vista. Vista was just sluggish. Win7 is a great platform for gaming. I have all my steam games loaded and they run great.

win7 is great, i used it for my laptop and it was good. i already preordered my upgrade for my desktop computer. i can honestly say, i have been a vista user since it came out, and ill have to say the difference between the two is noticeable. i dont know about others, but load times is faster, opening apps is also fast. just speed for me all the way.

and like most of the guys said, "windows 7 is what vista was suppose to be."

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RC with:

1TB Hitachi 7200RPM HDD

Windows 7 is way better and more stable than XP or Vista!
