My sons computer is a hp pavilion with windows vista and two days ago when he turned it on it loaded up normal until it got to the desktop and all he got was a black screen and all he could see was the mouse cursor.
Today i tried to boot it up in safe mode but got the same thing. It's just strange that it boots up normal but when the desktop is suppose to show we get the black screen. Anyone got any suggestions?

Sounds like explorer.exe is hanging. Try this:

ctrl+alt+delete to get the Task Manager up. Click on file, then new task (run...) and in there type explorer.exe

Hmm could be just clogged up with spyware...I helped a lady's laptop who basically did that as well, ended up having a crapton of rootkits and all sorts of nasty bugs. Does your son have Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?

Has your copy of windows been activated. I heard something like that might happen if it isn't after the 30 day period.

32

yes it has been activated, it's about two years old.

There's a software that I used called ComboFix that worked wonders on that lady's computer that got rid of all the stuff that was making her PC act up. But before you do that,f you can do command prompt safe mode do a chkdsk c: /f , or if you have a Vista 32bit cd for that same OS, try using the repair utility maybe? The first thing I would do is chkdsk.
