I have a bunch of video I want to convert/compress. The original files are .WTV (Windows 7 Media Center video). It's recorded TV. I use Microsoft's WTVConverter to convert the WTV to DVR-MS since most programs don't support WTV yet. No problems there. However, I want to compress the DVR-MS and I'm running into problems. I used ATI AVIVO to convert a few files to Divx and MediaCoder to convert to XviD, 800KBs video and 128kb audio, default container. The problem I am having is the audio/video is horridly out of sync. What gives? Any ideas? I pretty much don't care what format/container I use, I just want it to be fast. The 800kbs XviD quality was good enough, compressing ~4GB file to ~400MB. Should I use a different format, different container, different program, etc? As I noted, I do have a lot of files to convert, so a batch/queue/convert folder option for the program would be nice. I'll poke around with it some more, but video isn't my thing so any input would be appreciated.

If you download the windows live movie maker, you can use it to compress the video into wmv. I use it and it does a pretty good job of keeping the audio synced, but it freezes occasionally, so save you project before trying to convert it if you use the program.

Personally, I use VirtualDub for most video converting. If you install the MPEG-2 plugin, it will be able to open the DVR-MS files and convert them to nearly any format that you have installed on your computer. I convert a lot of files to x264 or XVID using this program, and it has a number of tools that can fix issues like the desync'd audio you're experiencing. Both VirtualDub and its MPEG-2 plugin are free. VirtualDub is also batch scriptable.

I ended up going with HandbrakeCLI and using PHP to create a batch file. Working nicely.

Oh I love doing things when you don't have the programs for it :) Great solution
