About a year ago I kept getting this error anytime I started up a game from steam. Guess what? Its happening again :(

I don't know what I did but it took over a week before I could actually play the game. I don't even remember what I did. Like in both instances I deleted that clientregistry.blob file but no dice. I've tried restarting steam and everything but nothing. I'm not going to reinstall steam/games because out of all the things I have read it never worked for anyone so I do not want to waste my time.

I'd kill to play TF2 right now! PLEASE, any help whatsoever is greatly appreciated!!!!!!
 
i just hit cancel and it works again. if not that, then i restart and it works.

That doesn't do anything. I've tried running all my games over and over again for about an hour now and the same thing happens every single time. I've also restarted steam 4-5 times. Nothing
 
im guessing you havent saved all your configs and what not and just complety reinstalled steam and all its apps.

I'm not going to try this yet because I've googled many forum topics about this and every time it says the person has uninstalled and reinstalled everything but the problem wasn't fixed. I do not want to spend a day or two doing this unless I either know for sure this will actually help me or if its my absolute final option.
 
Try disabling the community overlay. This solved my problem. I'm not sure what it is but it kept causing mine to crash. Goto File > Settings > In-Game > and uncheck ingame overlay.

Well, if that doesn't work:
  1. Make sure you have Vista SP2
  2. Run steam as an administrator:
    • Right-click your 'Steam' link. Choose "Run as administrator"
    • The steam.exe file can also be found in your Program Files\Steam\ folder.
  3. Disable UAC, or User Account Control
    • Control Panel
    • User Accounts
    • Choose "Turn User Account Control on or off"
    • Uncheck the "Use UAC to help protect your computer" box
    • Select 'Ok' and restart your computer.

Work your way down the list, testing each step as you go.
 
Thank you guys for the suggestions but still nothing. I'm going to go complain to steam now. If this is anything like last year I might as well give up :( I don't know what happened last year but one day a few weeks to a month later the game just decided to start up.

Just out of curiosity, what antivirus program are you running?

I run both Avira and Live One Care. I've had it like this for a couple months now and I've been able to run TF2 with no problems. And of course I'll post the solution if they provide one.
 
A little update, I tried downloading a program that was supposed to scan and fix my registry files or whatever. And of course that didn't do it either. This really blows seeing as it is the weekend now.

Everyone that I know that does techincal work creates documentation on what they are doing. If you have a problem, write it down and the steps you have done to attempt to fix it. When you get it fixed, write down what fixed it. Use this material for future reference material.

Its either a steam issue or a Windows issue. You need to isolate the issue. Personally just uninstall the games and steam, clean out the left over folders and registry parts and reinstall everything. If that doesn't work I assume it would be a Windows issue. If your worried about download time, leave it going overnight while you sleep. Make you you have taken the generic steps first and not skipping them, updating scanners and scan for virus's and malware. Check the Event Viewer and see if that shows anything that might help.

As for the debate on UAC to be on or off should be carried out else where.

I think you need to give the techs who post here a step by step process of what you are doing to create your issue. Not all the time do other forum posts out on the net have created the same error by the same way others have. In other words there could be multiple ways of getting to an error.
 
I'm almost 100% sure that this is a windows error. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Steam and TF2 and it didn't do anything. I'm contemplating doing a system recovery using the backup disks I got with my computer when I bought it. I'm just worried if I'm going to have to find and load drivers for every single piece of hardware on it. I bought my computer from Future Shop and it has recovery disks and a backup partition on the hard drive. I've tried reinstalling a system before but couldn't do anything with it because I couldn't get drivers for the internet ports. If someone can give me a little advice before I do this that would be awesome.
 
Well, my advice is to just sit tight and wait until steam support gets back to you; I wouldn't do anything drastic at this point.

Why don't you try playing a different game this weekend? For starters I would suggest Insurgency, it's a good one. I would also recommend Research and Development, a hl2 puzzle-based mod. It's got a couple hours of play time, and is really quite amusing.

Unfortunately any game that runs on the source engine doesn't work for me. I tested it with INS and Gmod.
