Well the problems seems to be I get random Lag spikes in all source games, and just source games. I have tried everything from resetting the router to directly connecting the router to the computer via ethernet cord.

I have tried turning off my firewall along with all my anti virus programs and it still randomly lags in just my source games.

What I mean when it lags is I will play fine for an hour or so then out of no where I will get ping spikes from my regular 50-70 ping all the way up to 120-600 ping. It's not a quick spike of ping but one that last long enough for my player to glitch halfway across the map.

I'm going to scan my computer next to see if it is a virus but I highly doubt its a virus that just effects my source games. I also highly doubt its my router for my old laptop starts up fine with no ping issues.

Well after this I'm out of ideas so any and all help will be grateful.

You should run a network monitoring program while you play. Then when a lag spike hits alt+tab out of your game and see which program is sucking up all of your bandwidth. If you need help doing this click the chat link in my profile. I'd be happy to assist.

Is your computer unresponsive during these lag spikes?

No. It's just a huge lag spike I get hit with but is playable to a point.

Shadow I'm going to try that out. Watch out for a message your way.

On another note. After writing this I played with out a hint of a spike for a solid hour and a half. Weird.

Okay, I'll be here for a bit if you need me. I'm at work right now so I'll be on and off.

By the way Resource Monitor is a wonderful tool. Task Manager > Performance > Resource Monitor > Network. It should suit your needs.

Just to add more into it. Was just in TF2 and had netgraph up. It did not show up as ping spikes but when I looked down at the IN section of the netgraph. I noticed that it would randomly jump alot up to about 700-1200 IN.

ANOTHER ADD. Ok It seems my ping is steady now after some adjustment to my rates in game. But now it seems to be all about my packet loss via IN and OUT. Both will randomly stay around 100-200 but randomly spike to 400-2000. This is starting to get very annoying.

Try this

rate 20000
cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 66

Also you said you've tried plugging directly into your modem and you have the same issue?

Could you provide some screenshots of net_graph 3 while you are having a lag spike, and while you are not?

Yes connecting right into the modem at the moment and no change.

Also tried the rates and that is what fixed the ping spike issue but now have a packet loss issue I guess... I don't know at the moment.

I will provide some screen shots in the morning.

It's now more of a hiccup. A slight stutter. But anyways here are some pics of net graph 3... No idea what any of it means.

well usually its best to have rates as high as they can go, because whatever the servers are set for will limit it without directly changing your settings (set them to 100 each and the server as 66 tick will limit them to 60/66, but connect to a 100 tick server and it'll be set at 100/100) if you can understand that.
the "rate" rate should have been the one to fix the lag stutter if any
but so far that net graph looks fine, little choke here and there, but that usually happens in busy servers etc whatever.

Thanks junk. I can live with the hiccups. If my ping issue comes back (which I hope won't) Ill be back with more screen shots. :P

Hey ChocolateVillain, I see that you're still getting a bit of choke once you set the values that ShadowBlade suggested.

I would recommend going here and scrolling down the first guide "How to Fix Your Lag in CS:S."
This guide applies to all source games, and hopefully you can get a better understanding of net_graph 3, and also get that choke down to a consistent 0.

Good Luck!

having choke isn't always about what your rates are set to tho, its about what the server is doing too. if theres a full server and stuff, you're rates are going to be running lower than what you set them too anyway, and you'll probably have a handful of choke
eg. at events i basically never go under 20 choke

That's why the guide suggests that you do your testing in an almost full to full server. It accommodates for those instances when the server is under the highest stress.

It won't come out with the best rates for CS:S scrims, but it will keep your choke under 2ish when a server is full.
