Ok so I am supposed to be getting 3mb download but I am not getting that according to speedtest.net. My internet used to be fine and not lag but for some reason the last few months it hasn't been that great. I've called them and they put in a new router and they are supposed to be putting in a internet server but that still didn't help. My ping goes up and down. My normal ping is about 94 and sometimes goes down to 78 but it goes way up in the thousands and comes back down again. Why can't it just stay at the normal ping? Can anyone tell me why this is and what might my isp doing to cause this? :facewall: :facewall:

Thanks

go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and do the test from the closest server to you, record what you get, then do the test again from a server across the nation, post both tests here.

make sure both servers have that star

My Location: Wildrose, ND

Closest Server: Grand Forks, ND
Ping: 128
Download: 1.35 Mbps
Upload: 0.17 Mbps

Across the nation server: Los Angeles, CA
Ping: 137
Download: 1.42
Upload: 0.14

Oh and I got the 94 and 78 ping from ventrilo if that helps.

Sometimes the servers just well, suck.....try different ones in your area, I know the one in Ft. Lauderdale thats like 5 miles away sucks, and I use the Miami one.

ya im supposed to have 10 mbps internet but i only rate 5.6-7 mbps through speedtest to the closest server to me. i run wired through a router tho, if i connect directly to my modem that jumps up quite a bit to 7-8 i forget. but i usually cant' because my roommate uses it too

edit, jumps to 8.86 when i bypass my router...huge difference

Well, first of all, if you're paying for a 3Mbit line, you're always going to get less than that. ISP's are awesome like that.

As for your ping fluctuations of 78 to 94 etc, that's pretty normal for a ping bouncing around.

And for the ping spikes... well it could be a number of things. Are you running on wireless? Do you notice a certain time of the day that you get these ping spikes? I'll ask more questions after I get what type of router you are using.

First thing I would recommend (if you're playing source games) is to check out this guide: "How to Fix Your Lag in CS:S." The lag guide is the second post in that thread, and it applies to all source games; not just CS:S.

Oh, also, could you please go and look at your router and write down anything that looks like the make, model number etc. of the router and post it here please.

Zhone router
Model #: 6218-I2-200
ADSL2+ 4PORT WIFI W/BC C

I have my computer hardwired directly to the router and my router is a wireless router because we have 3 laptops that get wireless internet from it. Is it bad to be hardwired to a wireless router and would this cause lag?

Thanks for the help.

I e-mailed my isp this is what they said,

NCC has received the new equipment. NCC's internet tech's are working on configuring and testing the equipment now. As to when this equipment will be in depends on the testing. Hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks.

No, being wired to a wireless router is not an issue. I'll look into the router and see what I dig up. Meanwhile, read over that guide I linked to; and do what it says. It should help a bit.

Well upon looking into your router... it looks like there's just connectivity issues. Nothing much about ping spikes etc. As far as wired goes, I don't think there's much that could go wrong with the router you have.

Waaaiiit a minute. Are you just complaining about general internet speed? Honestly... the stress of my midterms is going to my head.

So ignore the "fix your lag in CS:S" stuff unless you have lag in a source game.

It sounds like your ISP sucks in general, but we'll do what we can do get your computer working as best as possible with what you've got.

First:
Turn off the rest of the computers on your network. Run speedtest on yours. Are the results any better?

Also, if you could download Trend Micro Hijack This, (the executable file if you don't want to install anything) right-click it and select "Run as administrator."

Once it opens, click "Do a system scan and save a log file" and post the contents of the log file here please.
If you could make sure to run the scan after your computer has been on for a while, that would be great. i.e. don't prepare for the scan, just scan it sometime after you have been on your computer for a while.

Sorry for the late reply, these last couple weeks have been crazy for me. (Midterms!?@#)

When I turned off all the computers this is what I got

Twin Cities, MN
Ping: 139 ms
Download: 3.00 Mb/s
Upload: 0.34 Mb/s

New York, NY
Ping: 128 ms
Download: 2.47 Mb/s
Upload: 0.32 Mb/s

Miami, FL
Ping: 267 ms
Download: 2.97 Mb/s
Upload: 0.34 Mb/s

Well seeing as you're getting your 3Mb/s (ish) when the other computers are turned off, I would guess that the ping spikes are when the laptops are requesting all of the bandwidth, and you're not getting any.

We can look into QoS (Quality of Service) engines to try and prioritize your games and their bandwidth draw, so that the laptops are at a lower priority, and they have to wait until the bandwidth is available (i.e. not steal it from your games)

I'm not familiar with any QoS engine other than the DLink extreme-N version, so any additional help from other community members would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: I'll filter through your HijackThis log later tonight. Thankyou for running it! :D

I always have ping in the 100's while playing on the servers. Also considerable lag from time to time, it really seems like when my machine starts lagging like crazy, nobody else is. The times when others complain of the lag , on say Turbine CTF , im not lagging at all. Guess it goes one way or the other. eh, its good for a few extra free frags for everyone lol.
