alright ati annoys me by not posting what amps are needed on the 12v rail for their video cards - and i simply cannot find it anywhere
i want to know what is required for a 5750/70 and 5850/70

the only hint towards this answer is given in a review seen HERE.
Single GPU 5750

* System in IDLE = 221 Watts
* System with GPU in FULL Stress = 299 Watts
* Difference (GPU load) = 78 Watt

So here's my power supply recommendation:

Radeon HD 5750 (single GPU)

* The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

however for these low power consumption cards, supposedly, 40 amps seems awfully high of a number...but is it correct? does anybody know exactly what is needed?

Yeah, the math on that quote is a bit off... 40 amps at 12 volts is 480 watts by itself, a massive load. As I understand, none of the 5xx0 series is supposed to take more than 200 watts at full load. I think 20 amps (240 watts total) for the video card (it can be across two rails) should be more than enough for a 5870 single-GPU setup. The card will also sometimes have a startup surge that takes more power, but it's short-lived. That translates to a good 650 watt power supply, but I'd go with a 750w to be safe.

Good luck finding a 500w power supply with 480w of 12v :).

thats exactly what i was thinking - because i have a fairly old but still useful 545W 25 amp on 12v rail PSU and i was hoping i wouldn't have to upgrade just yet if i wanted to get a 5750

That should be adequate, so long as you don't have a ton of hard drives and other accessories :P.

nah just 1 HDD, 1 monitor....even if it wasn't enough i'd need to know what i'd have to upgrade too tho right - just wish ati wasn't stupid and posted the needed amps, such a headache
