New GPU finally!

Okay guys I need a bit of help. I'm finally upgrading from my beastly 8800gt.

I know it's an extremely bad time to buy a graphics card :/ But my girlfriend is really bad at saving money and she wants to buy me a late birthday present.

I don't know anything about the Galaxy company or how good they make products, but for a GTX275 that is really cheap and it would be hard to pass it up.
 
I'd also recommend a 5770 if thats the price range you have looking at the two cards you chose. It performs pretty much the same as the GTX 260 and GTX 275 sometimes and beats the GTX 260 a fair amount of times. It also overclocks pretty well from what i've read. One review site was able to max the Core clock at 960mhz from 850mhz since thats all CCC overdrive let them go up to, they said they could probably get some higher clocks but would probably also need a better heatsink since temps got a bit high. They also got memory to like 1400mhz from 1200mhz which is also insane.
I would take a look at the 5770..........if you can afford it go 5850 but im gonna guess its not in ur budget range.

The 5770 might be a better choice over the other two cards cuz it will fair better when new games come out supporting DX11 if that matters to you. Its also better to invest in newer tech than old tech considering the GTX 200 series will be replaced soon and the new ATI 5 series are out.

As for the GTX 275 galaxy, i think they are an alright brand, they aren't really well known and as famous as like EVGA and stuff but they should be fine.....that also isn't the cheapest though, a while back before the ATI 5 series came out, i saw GTX 275's going for like $185-195 after rebates.

If your gonna get a GTX 260, i recommend the GTX 260 black edition if they still sell those, its the fastest GTX 260 i believe and the overclocks on it are crazy.
 
Yeah like pew said the 5770 is a great graphic card for the price. If you want to get the 260 because its cheaper i suggest this one. It is pre-overclocked and is supposed to stay cooler with the heat pipes. And Pew the GTX 260 black edition card is almost $300 now, so that might be a little out of his budget.
 
Thanks for your replies guys. But, I've had really bad experiences with ATI and probably would never go back with them. And I'm using Windows 7 and I wouldn't want to wait to get a stable driver. Plus the 5770s are puny xD but perform good.

I do like the MSI 260, seems to be a great cooler they slapped on there. But the 275 is just a little bit more in price but the extra shaders really give it a boost.

As far as the DX11 stuff goes...I could care less really. It looks the same as DX10 to me.

The budget is $220 including shipping, btw.
 
ATi has improved a lot since the 3xxx series.

Honestly i would not buy any nVidia cards until the 300 series come out.

if you can wait (and really want an nVidia card) for the 300 series i would do that.
if now is the time you have to buy, and you really don't want to go ATi, then the 275 is probably your best choice (although not ideal)
or you could live with the 8800gt till better drivers come out for the 5770 then get one of those
 
Well the problem with ATI happened with a 4870.

And like I said, I doubt she would have any money left by time the 300s come out.
 
It was my brothers. An HIS 4870 1gb

First, He only got 19fps average in Crysis at 1600x900 which isn't normal. And it idled at 70c even with the fan speed turned up. Then the fan just died. He rma'd and the same thing happened within 2 months. Also, he never overclocked.

As for me, I had a 3870 a while ago and the DVI ports just gave out one day.

So switched back to Nvidia who I've never had a single problem with.

wow that sucks..........your like part of the 1-2% of people that get those problems i think...i havnt had problems with my ATI 4850, the high temps are normal for the card but the thing breaking on you and all just sucks.

You could give them one more chance :P haha, yea the 5770 is puny.....you should ask her to just give you money and chip in some of your money and get a 5850 that thing is beastly. The driver support is fine too from my knowledge, even if you read the reviews you see they have no problems and the framerates are all good.

ATI usually gets bad FPS in Crysis but not that bad so there def. was a problem there....crysis favors Nvidia
 
I'd love to chip in money too but I gotta buy the psu which is gonna be a Corsair (I don't trust no name brands)

I would go for ATI, but my brother is now on his 3rd 4870 and he's constantly on his toes when playing games in fear of something going wrong. Maybe in the future though :)

yea maybe, that just sucks though, maybe you'll have better luck some other time.

Im not even gonna lie but hold off on buying the Nvidia cards as long as you can. Have you realized that like a ton of Nvidia cards are sold out?? or like discontinued on Newegg, well mostly the GTX 275, GTX 285
From wat i've heard, the new ones should be coming out like soon or not.....

Either way, take a look at this GTX 260 closest manufacture overclocks to the GTX 260 black edition that i've found.

The GTX 275 isn't bad though even though it is not a fairly well known brand. Actually, after taking further looks at it, i say go with it if you want Nvidia right now. The Galaxy one is a non-reference board and has an aftermarket heatsink on it after taking better looks at it. It will be worth the $205, tell your girlfriend to get that one. You will probably be able to get some nice overclocks out of that one too since its got an aftermarket heatsink on it and its a non-reference board.
 
Well being how it's a non reference board makes me kind of worried. I think if I got the EVGA model, it would last longer and have a better warranty. I just wish they had some reviews on the Galaxy card.

And yes, I'm saving the 8800gt to use as dedicated Physx.

Yea i never really realized how much Physx did, im gonna read more into and learn more about it, im pretty interested in it. It even helps boost FPS in some games.

Well, you shouldn't really be worried, non-reference boards may be different, but they are usually tweaked to be better, like the voltage regulation and everything is usually better and allows for stable and higher overclocks, the aftermarket heatsink isn't as aggressive as say the Twinfrozr on the MSI but its still looks fairly good and definitly better than the stock one. Yea EVGA ain't bad and i like the whole step-up program thing.

Galaxy seems to be trusted....i finally remember more about the company, they are actually fairly good...i've seen their products on the GTX 295 and such, they make very good non-reference boards from what i know and this review proves it too.

But, summer of next year when I start college, I'm getting $2,000 and most will be put into a new build. So, as of right now a 260 could probably be enough. I'm using a 1440x900 resolution so my frames won't be effected that much than a 24in monitor would.

Get the GTX 275 AMP.....thats a pretty nice overclock, maybe one of the highest overclocks from manufacture. I think the MSI Twinfrozr gets 700 core and this one gets 702.

Yea nice man $2,000 by then you will definitly be able to get the new Nvidia Fermi cars/GTX 300 series. You can even go for a dual-gpu solution with that much. ATI 5850x2/5870x2 should be coming out soon and by then i can see the price dropping a lot. Or you could get the Nvidia GTX 395 or watever it turns out to be and get some killer performance too. Probably nvidia since ur a fan of them over ATI. Just get the Zotac GTX 275, your girlfriend is paying for it anyway :)
 
I only run EVGA cards, and I am running 3 GTX 275 Super-clocked cards and if it were me I would go the EVGA 275 I think the basic model now is around $200 now
