Hey I noticed edgegamers has vBulletin that are used as a site system. vBulletin 4.0 is coming out, so I was wondering is the site going to upgrade to it?

I was wondering that too, but figured they would let us know if they decided on it. I know I did it with my forums since it saves a lot of money in the end.

How exactly do you mean it saves a lot of money in the end? I pre ordered the 4.0 one for mine, but I do not know if it's worth transferring to it since all the old mods will take time for the developers to transfer to the new 4.0 format. It scares me that not all mods will transfer over.

The blog and photo albums alone cost the price of the pre-release purchases (assuming you currently have an active license). Add on to that the cost of the typical annual fee and you'll see how you save cash.

As for modifications: Unless you have a VERY heavily modified site it isn't a big deal. I am sure members can deal without having a few perks for a month or two. ^_^

Well I am just wondering if I should keep 3.8 or update to 4.0 in a couple of days, I mean what is more worth it? No mods are gonna be released for 4.0 in a while I am assuming? I am new to vBulletin, therefore don't know how fast mods are updated to newer licenses. The famous ones im talking about, like the arcade, casino etc..

In this case you should just wait to upgrade until you personally see the mods out you want. Arcade MIGHT even work with 4.0, so far nobody is sure yet and vbulletin themselves said some still can be compatible.

Keep your forum as is but keep an eye on the mods added for the 4.0 and when you feel there are enough to your liking then upgrade. :)

Sounds good, how may I know which mods will work for the new vbulletin? Like what specific stuff do i have to look for? Thanks, kinda new so detailed instructions would be great.

vBulletin.com is the official site for the forum software, but you will find that http://www.vbulletin.org is THE site for modifications.

From there you can look at modifications for specific vBulletin versions.

Example: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=234

That is all vBulletin version 3.8 modifications.

You DO need to be a member though and you DO need a license. Some people try to use stolen software from vBulletin and if you have one of those you won't be able to access the mods here.

Once 4.0 is out a forum will be created at vBulletin.org for 4.0 modifications and you can just keep an eye on that to see what is added.

I can add screenshots for more detail later if you want.

yeah i know about the mod site and all, and i am able to download mods from there, the question is, how do you know if a 3.8 mod works on 4.0? I read somewhere but forgot it, it said that if the install requires this and that, then it wont work. If you get what i mean, like template changes i believe? then it wont work on 4.0 etc.. do you know what installation stuff for 3.8 wont work on 4.0?

I actually don't use a lot of mods so I am unsure. I usually just check one out (plus a mod will usually mention if it is 4.0 compatible on it's thread) and if it works..it works.

I was using skins from a previous version without a problem before. =)

If all else fails and you see an item you like, but are unsure...post in the thread and ask! =)

Yes i know it says the version, but im saying, what if you take a 3.8 version mod and how would you know if it would work on 4.0?

There are different mods that require different modifications to your site, some modifications dont affect anything at all no matter the version, some matter. thats what im asking, what are the modifications.

say, can you tell me how to enable side blocks to appear in forums just like it appears on home page of cmps? Thanks, kinda new.. googled found nothing.

I answered that.
(1) The post with the modification will usually post if it is 4.0 compatible.
(2) If for some reason the author hasn't done so (maybe they haven't been active) then you can usually post asking for help/information in the thread. The community there can be very helpful.

cmps - do you mean CMS? Like a web portal? I am not completely familiar with that term, can you give more info on what you mean?

yes I meant CMS the web portal basically off of vbadvanced.org I believe? not sure, I bet you use it right?

Or even if you don't do you know how to make the blocks appear on the left and right side of the forums? Like they do on this edgegamers site?

Originally you had to use them through a third party so I never bothered since my particular forum didn't need them. The 4.0 though is going to have one already built in which will be highly customizable. You should in fact be able to just ad a box on either side through admin CP and put the coding in for the ad.

I cannot confirm this at the moment since it still isn't out, but once it is I'll let you know. :)

So you do not know how to make it appear on forums? I have latest free CMPS installed but i need to make blocks appear on forum.
