Anybody ever seen (in person) a flat screen mounted above a fireplace?

If so, how did it look? Was it to high? Did you watch it for extended time?

I currently have a 65'inch DLP that I bought back in 2001. It's time to replace it with something new and shinny (and THIN).

I was thinking about mounting it above my mantel. Man, would that ever create extra room!! (DLP's back in those days were HUUUUGEE).

Mm, I think that would be kind of awkard trying to watch. Don't want the light interferance when the fire place is on either.

...I'm south of Houston. I bought the house in Feb 2001. Probably used the fireplace 8 times since then, and those were really just cause I wanted to, not cause I needed to.

Gotcha, just sayin it would be weird depending on how high it sits.

Don't really like having to look up.

Depends. The top of my fireplace mantel at my current house is 4 ft high. At my old house, it was nearly 6ft. It works fine at my current house, would have never worked at my old house.

I have seen a few large TVs mounted above fireplaces - about half of them prevent use of the fireplace (:(). In my experience, they're also mounted too high to be watch comfortably.

Does the heat interfere with the TV(or other eletronics near it) while it is actually lit? I would think if it gets to hot just like computer it would burn up and fry.

Well like he said, he lives south of Housten. He's only used it 8 times because he wanted to, not needed to. So, most likely, yes the heat would be a bit much for the TV if he was using the fire place, he's not. Honestly, I think it would be just a lil too high for anyone, unless you've got like a bar-couch(Bar-stool meets couch LAWL). Anyways, if you can, you should mount the TV on a wall, and have the fireplace off the the side, but not totally blown off. Just my 2 cents XD

My boss has his over his fireplace and he said nothing but good things, they watch stuff all the time.

Mine is sitting on my mantel, which is 4' high. The mantel generally protects it from the heat. Be sure you have a long room to sit back aways (like mine) from the TV, or your viewing angle will be steep looking up, which could be annoying. You might can get a mobile mount that would allow you to swing your TV downward when watching it, but idk.

that's actually what I'm thinking about doing. I'm looking at a 58'inch plasma, and mounting it above the mantel. The mount i'm looking at actually comes out from the wall a bit (that's good, would keep it off the fireplace wall), and has a tilt ability, so I could put a slight down angle on it.

Remoldled a basement and installed a fireplace, which had a flat screen installed above it. THe fireplace was roughly 5ft tall, and it looked fine afterwards.
