help with gmod server

O and hi I'm new here.

So anyway I am trying to host a small Gmod server. I followed a tutorial and my server seems to be running well except for 2 things:

-My map downloading seems to be really slow. do I need a download service or something for this? I have I really Verizon fios connection but i don't know if that makes a difference.

-My server always shows up in my LAN tab. How do I make my server public? I know I need to forward my ports but I know how to do that.

Any help is appreciated!

also i have my server on an ip adress but it shows up as a different one when i see it in game. i know people can connect by typing connect <server's ip address>

Also to add on and answer your question about slow map downloads. The problem is that, unless you have the 20Mbps upload package, you'll be running into slow upload speeds to the people who are trying to download the map you're playing.

The best way to get faster downloads is to upload all of the new models/sounds/scripts/etc that you've added to your server to a web server, then set that server as your sv_downloadurl. Here's a quick tutorial on how to do so.
