Windows 7 issues?

This is a very common issue and its hitting me right now.

I just purchased a brand new computer, Not the biggest on the block but well above gaming standards well my issue runs into ram.

Im running a Intel i7 920 processor
6 gig DDR3 ram
nVidia GTX 260

All on a X58 motherboard SLI ready.

My problem is this, when purchased the computer it came with vista 64bit and a free upgrade to windows 7 64. Installing windows 7 my ram shows 6gig (3.99 usable) I have tried resetting bios and cmos but not to my prevail.

does anyone els have any tips or tricks as to the problem on this? or is this just something I have to wait for a fix to become available?
 
Oh its dedicating the rest of the 2 gig's to my video card, its has 1700 on board and 3500 something total now lol
 
Problem is you ran a 32bit copy of windows 7. You need a 64bit copy of windows 7 to get all your ram.
 
No its a 64bit copy of windows 7. In the control panel it even shows Operating System 64 bit
 
If it is indeed a laptop without dedicated video memory to the GTX 260 mobile chipset (in actuality a 9800 GT chipset) then it would use the system memory as video memory. I find it strange that an Nvidia mobile chipset would not have dedicated memory though, I thought most ATI/Nvidia mobile chipsets, especially in the gaming range have dedicated video memory. If this is a desktop computer, there is no way that it is using system memory for the graphics card.
 
It's not a laptop if he has an X58 motherboard.

If windows is not seeing all 6 Gigs of ram it IS possible that one of your chips is either bad or improperly seated. Does it see all 6 Gigs in the Bios? You could try running memtest86 and see if it passes all the tests.

Also be careful. Some motherboards if you don't have all of the slots filled you have to have the ram in either 1 and 3 or 1 and 2 depending on your motherboard.
 
Also: Make sure all RAM is of the same type. All 1gb sticks, all 2gb sticks, etc.

Admittedly overlooked the listed motherboard, this post is what led me to believe it was a laptop. I'd like to know if all 6 GB were recognized with Vista 64 or if this problem has existed since you purchased the laptop.
 
all 6 gigs show in bios and all 6gig were recognized is vista. Just the update is not likeing it so well. If ya google search this its a huge problem, currently im waiting for my upgrade disk from dell and hopefully there disk will fix it. If not they will be lol.

This may not apply to you but have you tried checking the memory settings in msconfig? This happened with my laptop (win 7 saw the 4 GB and only 3 GB were available). I opened msconfig.exe, clicked the Boot tab, Advanced options button, and unchecked the Maximum Memory checkbox (it had 3 GB set as the Maximum Memory).

I actually hope you haven't tried this as it was a very easy fix for me.
 
Yup already been there lol. Its pretty annoying but hey get this.

My computer is only running with 3.99 gigs of ram instead of 6 like suppose to. But it uses less ram with only 4 gigs than it did with 6 gigs running windows 7 over vista. Thats insane I dont know how but it does lol.
 
Is it only showing the 4 gigs in the system properties or have you looked within other programs such as cpu-z, everest ultimate, etc ?

I dont know what causes this but both my bro's and my machine have done this before. Dont recall which program reported 4 gigs, but all others showed 6. A simple reboot and the one program reporting 4 went back to 6.

If this is known issue and you see alot of it around the web, an answer will turn up. Your actually lucky it is a known problem, there will be more people troubleshooting it as opposed to something unheard of. U say its a dell, i would bother dell about it if haven't already.
 
All programs show six gigs but show 3.99 usuable let me get a screen of it.

Both programs are shoing all 6 gigs but if ya look at the top there when you go to system settings and ranking it shows that 3.99 usable.
 
I had a butt load of stuff running, but its something to do with the bug. One guy on the net he had a pic posted all most all of his 12 gigs were dedicated to hardware.

Does editing this value on WinXP Pro work? currently the maxmem box is UNCHECKED but could I check it and say put it 6gb so it will recognize the other 3gb of my ram? or is that a no-no in XP? lol
 
I have tried the bottom one both ways it didnt work lol,

I have also tried reinstalling 3 times on windows 7 same issue. Its a bumfumbler but it is what it is lol.
 
How much was this computer?

EDIT: On a relevant topic, I have no idea what's going on, had the same problem with a way older comp when I tried adding RAM to it, didn't know how to fix it now, still don't, sorry!

EDIT2: I'm using a Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate, it's pretty nice, but got some kinkz, such as I was BSODing with my AMD @ 3.1 GHz which wasn't happening on Win XP Pro 32-bit. In CS 1.6 you can't Alt-Tab. Otherwise, it's nice!
