Hey, I've been comparing FPS and all that kind of stuff, and I'm amazed how I'm using a Radeon 4870 with everything maxed without vsync and I only manage to pull out 60-120 fps, when others with crappier cards can get 200+, in the stress test i can do 235 fps / sec but in game I only get about 80....

I'm running an
AMD 7750 @ 2.7GHz,
4GB Gskill RAM @ 800 MHz,
MSI 700W,
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
HIS Radeon 4870

Help is greatly appreciated!

ive noticed myself that the greater power you put in, the less you get out.
and the less you put in the more you get. well that is to me. and out stats are pretty evened up exept i run a nvidia gtex 78000

Well the lesser cards have unstable frames, unlike yours which is more stable = lower but high frame 60-120 vs 60-200 or higher, jumping from good fps 60 to godly fps 200 the drop in between that is bad regardless of how high your fps goes it stresses your card more when it does that, hence why we have max framerate in most games.

My suggestion is, find your average fps and set that the max fps, keeps your card healthy and happy that way.

Hope that answers your question.

just keep max fps at your cards average like said above and youll have extremely smooth game play!

What map are you running usually?

Office is insane with how low the fps drops.

Anyways, I think it's pretty common and for some reason older cards run the game just as well as newer. The AMD Dual Core you have is still top of the line compared to older Phenoms and X2's so that shouldn't be the problem. If 60 is the lowest it drops, consider yourself pretty lucky. My Phenom and 8800gt sometimes drops to 20-30.

my ping is around 70... i live in toronto and server is in texas, however, i've talked to some guys at school who say that it's my processor bottlenecking the 4870... because the card is very good, and even if i set everything to low, i'll maybe get an avg increase of 10 fps, so its obviously not hard for the card to run this game...

many people say valve games are very CPU based?

It's highly unlikely that your dual core is bottlenecking your card, but there isn't a great way to test for it. I suppose you could try getting a new processor, but that's a pricey way to see if it is so.

I have noticed that AMD chips tend to run games at a lower fps, but that may just be a misconception.

Only advice I have for you is to update drivers and overclock your card or processor, whichever you feel more comfortable doing. AMD has the Overdrive program which you could experiment with to see how your system does.

It's normal. CSS isn't multithreaded so when multiple guys get on screen the FPS plummets, playing on high playercount servers really wasn't intended. Anyways, that FPS is normal and you shouldn't be complaining about it. I get 255 FPS on the test but sometimes drop into the in normal games 60s with similar specs. When I go back to like a 24 slot I rarely drop below 80-90fps, 24 slots just to seem much better gameplay wise anyway.

Q6600 quad @ 3ghz 8800 GTS 512 (g92) 4g 1333 DDR2

Now, if you were dropping to like the 30s and staying there, that would be a problem. Your FPS is perfect.

Source engine is CPU heavy, and since it's not multithreaded you can't really get super high framerates all the time in big servers, it still taxes 1 core pretty hard.

Hmmm, Okay!
Thx Chemist

Cause this guy at my school said that it is bottlenecking and if I'd get a quadcore I'd be getting at least a 200 fps boost! Haha, and I was actually thinking of buying a quadcore, but I never thought i'd be needing upgrades after just 8 months of making this comp! I'll just buy L4D2!
Love your sig btw haha!
