Enough about L4d2. Here's a great review on the up-coming Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Words in (parenthesis) are my personal thoughts. I made it more convenient for you guys and copied the review over to eGO.

"Bad Company 2 dishes out meaningful experiences."

It’s not hard to become numb while competing in an online shooter. As these components continue to become beefier and more complex, the impact an individual has in the outcome of a match shrinks. But not every upcoming online setup is following this trend: Digital Illusions CE is blending massive team strategy with individual, hard-nosed impact in Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

I’ll give you an example. In a single match of BC2 last evening, I sabotaged two Russian beacons while keeping my feats-in-progress going with a hot barrel and a magazine packed with lead death-dealers. I butchered ten combatants, helped to defend a position from incoming armor, and jolted around six fallen comrades with a vicious blast of electrical current -- all in a span of nine or so minutes.

I didn’t need to kill 20 people in a row or compete for countless hours for the privilege of experiencing success(obviously talking about MW2). I just needed to load the BC2's closed beta and hop into a match.

Rush Arica Harbor

The BC2 beta showcases one map, Arica Harbor. It’s a Middle Eastern-themed map featuring a sea of light-colored sand, twisted and broken set pieces, and tons of sun. Breathtaking at first glance, the brightness reminds that not all shooters require murk and gloom to be special. Likewise, the sharp contrasts between the sand, the demolished vehicles, and the various set pieces provide a platform for the stunning visuals. If BC2’s full online component keeps to this same bar, I see it becoming one of the best-looking multiplayer games of this generation. No doubt.

Arica Harbor hides its scale with a bit of cleverness. It’s the people competing in the beta’s single game mode, Rush, who decide the size of the colorful map. The mode pits two 12-person teams against each other -- the Attackers and the Defenders. The Attackers' immediate goal is annihilate two marked beacons with explosives, while the other side attempts to defend this. If the Attackers succeed, two more beacons appear further down the map, forcing all to rush the new positions. This can happen a total of three times until the map uncoils to its crescendo: the harbor itself.

I’ve experienced some of the nastiest, most intense slugfests in the game at the harbor. DICE put both targets inside a lone building, with both sides spawning outside of the structure. That’s conducive to plenty of brawling outside of the objectives, which are easy to defend, yet playfully exposed to outside influences. This tends to create some major satisfaction after the objective is completed -- even for the Defenders. If the aggressors can’t hit both targets within 100 collective spawns, the game ends.

Guns, Tanks, and Gadgets, oh my!

Sticking with Battlefield tradition, there are several vehicles that both sides of the conflict can use to maim each other in various ways. Arica Harbor has tanks, ATVs, and even Halo-style motorbikes for fast, flanking travel. Also continuing with Battlefield tradition are the terrible vehicle controls(I find them to be perfectly fine).

While there’s fun to be had and strategic opportunities with the inclusion of vehicles, something fascinating happens as objectives are destroyed and the map expands: the game starts reducing vehicle spawns, forcing people to forgo them and fight on the ground with guns.

The shift in warfare puts the focus on the tight gunplay. BC2’s mechanics remind me of Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The guns are lifelike -- heavy, and accurate to a point. The emphasis is thus on stop-and-pop. You can’t hold down the trigger and expect magic to happen. Executing a kill requires a bit of patience and skill. In contrast to this is the sniper rifle, which seems to walk on the Halo side with its accuracy while running.

Similar to the gunplay, the class and leveling systems borrow a bit from the MW2 model, allowing for snappier progression regardless of success and skill(has this guy not heard of BF2 or BF2142?)

Four classes are represented in the beta: Medic, Engineer, Assault, and Recon. Each one carries its own specific equipment. For example, Medics have bullet-heavy LMGs and defibrillators to revive fallen opponents. Assaults carry long-range rifles with grenade launcher attachments, and so on.

Being a class man reaps rewards in terms of specific and universal progression. An well-performing Medic earns guns as he kills, and specific tech perks as he deploys health packs and revives others. In turn, this makes Medics more valuable to any team.

And that’s not quite all there is to earn, of course -- a quick look at the “Weapons and Gadgets” screen reveals tons of medals, universal unlockables based on specific levels, special dog tags and even insignias.

The progression is simple, yet effective. Medics who can defend (or attack) with success while scanning the field for the fallen are valuable to Squads. Plus, Medics who can do these sorts of things ramp up the opportunity for collective success because of their reviving ability in Rush.

Meaningful experiences

I think the BC2 beta boils down to meaningful experiences. The game doesn’t force you to become a cog in the machine, shackled to a class or arbitrary orders by an overarching commander who needs to see the sun every now and then. Rather, it allows players to express themselves to some degree and experience success on their own terms.

The particular match I mentioned earlier is a great example. While on my way to an objective, I jolted teammates and blasted several enemies before placing an explosive brick on the marked target. That’s impact, a meaningful experience within the online component. I wasn’t sitting in a corner eating kills or relying on others to do all the dirty work(must I say?). I was able to do my thing at my own pace and directly affecting the outcome of the match.

The marketing talks a lot about BC2 being “dynamic.” I agree -- it has a dynamic edge, which in turn provides fodder for tons of individual and unique stories and shared experiences within. The squad-based tactical spawns and the hardcore destruction engine are certainly a major part of this idea, providing unique chaos in every match.

Regardless of how often I play Arica Harbor, each match is a different one -- parts of the environment are blasted away, forcing me to take different routes and seek shelter in other places, and my squad members do just the same, forcing me to spawn in different locales. In short, it’s all fresh in Arica Harbor to some degree.

And that’s it

I look forward to seeing the full online component in BC2. This Arica Harbor-based beta was a fascinating one, allowing me to see the little touches that should make this game pop in March. That is to say, if things remain the same from the beta.

And if the larger things go unchanged, and this is a real, accurate reflection of what to expect with the full game, then Battlefield fans won’t walk away from BC2 disappointed: its beautiful look and spectacular mechanics will keep people playing hungrily, begging for more between each match. We’re ready to be consumed all over again.

agree that its a pretty sick game.....im probably gonna be getting it on PC instead of PC though as i like the PC control mechanics a lot better than PS3.......i really only get PS3 exclusives on PS3 haha and racing/sports games

I'm very hyped for this. I've been a fan of Battlefield since 1942. I'm just worried I might not be able to run this. Graphics look too good.

Bad Company 2 epicness

+1. I've heard good things about the beta for PS3 (mainly from friends at school. All the gameplay videos, the "multiplayer moments" videos make me want March 2010 to come sooner. Hope they give the game a good polish, because honestly, this game looks TOO good to pass up. (And yes, they are COD players, and realize Battlefield series games actually need teamwork and they actually enjoy it more.)

True story.

If a PS3 can run this at around 45-55 frames I'm pretty sure you can run this on a 9800gt at almost max graphics. Regardless that It looks so friggin' nice it's on the Frostbite engine so it's going to run super super smooth. I'm building a new machine for Christmas just for this :)

Im pretty sure you can run it on a 9800gt.......you guys all do know that the PS3 runs the game at 1280x720 right?? which is a pretty low resolution considering we run it on PC's at like 1680x1050 or higher, im surprised the games looks so good still haha

The beta is pretty epic, its still somewhat buggy though, when i use the Type 88 sniper rifle....i swear i shoot someone 6 times in about 2 secs and they don't die, i see the X pop up on my crosshair for all 6 shots and they dont die...idk if im shooting too fast or something but somethings definitely wrong considering i kill them in 2 shots most of the time but thats when i take my time shooting them.......its kinda annoying. Also the springing is kinda weird, when you turn using the right joystick (look around joystick) it doesn't really respond all that well or atleast it feels somewhat sluggish when you try to turn when sprinting.

Otherwise all these problems are expected of a beta i guess....its very promising though and can't wait to see the final version, GET IT FOR PC THOO lol better control mechanics

The PS3's GPU is equivalent to that of a 7800gt. Pretty pathetic if you ask me and knowing that 9600gt's are going for 60 bucks now-a-days makes me feel pretty darn crappy for spending $240 on a blue-ray player. Let's try and avoid console discussions to prevent hated console wars. Also BFBC2 is actually in Early Alpha state so there will be PLENTY of room for improvements.

its actually a 7800GTX if i remember correctly....which should be better than a 7800gt, its not a shabby GPU, just outdated now

I don't this will be one of the most anticipated games of all time, not just 2010. I mean its BF3 people, PC gamers have been waiting a longgg time for this. With 1943 being pushed back and pushed back, it doesn't even matter anymore. Also they have many months to build the hype. The actual gameplay footage looks better then some game trailers IMO.

I can't imagine playing it on anything else than PC, then again I can't imagine playing any FPS on a console, until I can use a cheap mouse/keyboard.

:) Can't wait! eGO will own BF3!

agreed, damn i reminisce wistfully about the days spent in bf1942 and then bf2 but how long has it been? an eternity, dont get me wrong, dod and cod/mw were and are great games but didnt fire me up as much as 1942/bf2 did, at least not the multiplayer anyways, this game just looks SICK! :w00t:

Now the big question is will we have our own servers for this game to call home. Man I really hope so, eGO needs something new imo and since CODMW2 is officially boycotted I think this will be the perfect substitute. The only thing we will not be able to do is enforce our bad language policy for this game because the characters cuss up a storm.

yea probably meaning we won't support the game  sucks.........the day MW2 updates and allows dedicated servers is going to be heaven and not a waste of my money

Well,

We would still enforce the rule of no cursing.

Also, Ranked BF servers are very high in price

Well,

Don't you think it would kind of hard to tell people to not curse when the characters are like F this F that eat it you piece of sh*t etc? I mean racism and sexism will not be a problem to enforce but telling folks to watch there language in this game seems like a hard sell to me. We will most likely not support this game for this reason and the cost issue imo. Shame :(

Nice review!

I thought developers didn't let people talk about Closed Betas? I was in the Closed Beta for Resistance 2 and they were castrating people that posted YouTube videos. They had volunteer and official teams scouring the internet for leaks.

Heard those same people where banned from Resistance servers too...or PSN...don't remember which. It was scary.
