mobo or CPU?

A month ago my PSU blew out while I had an i7 920 OC'd at around 3.8Ghz. When I replaced the PSU I also re-seated the CPU. Ever since, my cores have been idling at 40C without an overclock and at max fan speed. I replaced the cooler and re-applied thermal paste at least 9 times and temperatures do not change. I have re-configured the fan system and even added another and the temperatures do not change. During heavy load, the temp will reach 89C and cap off.

My question is: after the PSU blew out and with the CPU overclocked, what is the likelihood that the problem is the CPU or the motherboard? Is it possible the temperature reading gauges have burned out and the readings aren't accurate, or is the chip damaged and will forever run hot? Can you think of a way to test without replacing or substituting hardware?

The motherboard is an ASUS P6T Deluxe, the cooler is a coolermaster V8, and PSU now is a corsair etc etc.

thanks

Easy way to tell is if you have an infrared thermometer shoot it and see if it's close to what the motherboard is telling you.

My guess is that the CPU got damaged when your PSU went.
