Hey guys, just wanted to share an awesome little anecdote I had happen.
My computer is:
Antec 900 case, all fans but side window fan
AMD 6400+ 3.2 GHz dual-core
Patriot RAM, 2x2GB
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT (Borrowed)
1 TB Western Digital
550 Watt Rosewill Power Supply
BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX AMD ATX motherboard.
And a 1920x1080 21.5" monitor.
The one thing that isn't awesome in the whole set up; the graphics card.
I am thankful that my friend lent the card to me, but it just wasn't cutting it with the core clock at 450 MHz. So I downloaded an overclock utility (Rivatuner) and started to raise the voltage. Knowing my case is like a refrigerator, I bumped the core clock (with the shader clock attached) up from 450 MHz, steadily to 550 MHz, and then 650 MHz, and topped out at 675 MHz final core clock. (The shader clock went from 918 MHz to 1376 MHz)
I then saw the slider for the memory clock. I started to steadily raise it... moving from 400 MHz, to 500 MHz. Then I clicked wrong, setting it to 580 MHz. Artifacts ruled my screen, my audio froze, the whole computer went unresponsive. In a terror, I shut down the computer, hoping, praying. It booted again after I gave it a minute (a VERY LONG minute) to cool down. I hadn't set the thing to boot with those settings, nor will I ever set it to, so it was back at nice, cold, default settings. I left it at 500 MHz.
My games run extremely better now, and ironically enough, I have a 9800 GTX+ on its way, and its starting core clock is 675 MHz. What fun I will have.
