PC parts replacement for downed computer

Sorry for the 500th thread about this, but I'm wishy-washy and might actually just buy some new replacement parts for the PC itself. I'm debating risk versus reward on just buying a laptop or remodelling my PC!

Yeah, my PC crashed hardcore, so I'm upgrading pretty much EVERYTHING in my PC except for my nVidia 9800GT and I'm trying to keep it at about ~$700. Within the next two weeks I'll be getting almost $400 from my dad, $200 or more from my aunt and uncle, $100 or more from my mom and brother, and I have $20 on me.

I HAVE a video card (the 9800GT), a 19" monitor, an MX518 mouse, and standard Dell mini-keyboard, but I need critique on everything else that I'm replacing, including the OS and HDD (featured in the screenshot below).

This is what I came up with. I present to you the oddest method ever of displaying PC parts; a picture of my shopping cart since I can't ACTUALLY link the shopping list.

Any particular reason you're going with Intel Processor? With your price range, I'd suggest an AMD proc. I'd also be happy to spec / build you a machine.
 
well actually the i5-750 from microcenter would make it the best buy/performance out of all AMD......there are reviews of the i5-750 beating an AMD phenom II x4 965 BE, both overclocked.
 
I'd replace that Caviar blue with a Caviar Black. Black's are up there with raptor drives when it comes to performance.
 
Here's my AMD build for you. Will the i5 beat it when you compare the benchmarks? Hell ya. Will you notice a difference in games with your 9800GT? Probably not. I suggest my build, and then use the extra money to upgrade that graphics card!

Same memory as he wanted, but within the bus speed range that you specific Ryken. The memory that you specific wouldnt work on that motherboard because its ddr2 & not ddr3.

Also, since theres not much detail when it comes to the hard drives & the rpm is the same, I would suggest a hard drive that will be a good price but will have the 5 year warranty, that way if something happens to it after 3 years, hes covered.

true he wont but i mean idk........the CPU's help get better frames by a small amount like ~7 FPS i think from reading.

Yea he probably should upgrade that GPU though
 
I have a Nvidia 9800gt and I can run any game maxed setting at pretty good fps. He shouldn't need to upgrade the gpu unless he is getting a bigger monitor or if hes wanting to run Crysis at 60fps.

It actually makes a very noticeable difference unless he's playing above 1080P. :P

Last summer, I went with a friend to pick out a monitor for him. He got one that was 1080P (previous one went up to 1680x1050) and we OC'd his Phenom 9850 to 3.2GHZ and it was smoother than it performed on his 1680 LCD in several games. It got rid of a great deal of "dips". When a large amount of objects come on screen, you will notice the difference between two processors.

The i5 isn't on there, but the i7 is, and we can all agree the i5 is a tad slower than the i7. The 955 will be more than enough proc for someone on this budget, especially given the GPU limitations. Yes, the 9800GT plays many games maxed, but it is starting to age, and saving $200 on this build will go a long (very long) way come Spring when the 300 series drops and ATI has to lower it's prices on the current 5800 series.

Think about it, which system would you rather have?

i5+9800GT OR phii 955+1GB 4890

Obviously you know where I fall...

Kinda off topic but does anyone know why the AMD Phenom II X4 940 @3.0GHz barely beats the AMD Phenom II X3 720 @2.8GHz? Shouldn't the quad core get a lot higher fps then the tri core. Could this be because the 940 is an AM2+ CPU and not a AM3 like the 720? Im just wondering because i was planning on buying the 940 when i have more money.
 
It's because most current games don't utilize the 4th core enough to make a noticeable difference. Right now, the fourth core is a bit of a waste. In another 6-12months, we'll see it being used more and more.

Also, that article helps show that maxing out your gpu is way more cost effective than maxing out your cpu.
 
I'm actually going to just be buying a whole new $550-700 custom PC from CyberPower with the $500-$700+ I'm getting from selling old stuffs and my checks I get every month. I was looking at these...:

I'm looking to get the most bang for my buck obviously, and I'd like a laptop that I can bring in to work and stuff, but I may just nab that for my birthday and go for a more reliable gaming desktop since I'll get more mileage out of a desktop PC than a laptop, for gaming at least, around that price range.

Angellas: I really appreciate the offer, but I have my mind made at the moment! ;D Lol, I went with Intel because I'm more familiar with their CPUs and such, versus AMD, which I have only used once. I'd be game for trying an AMD though, as I've been hearing from pretty reliable sources that while AMD and Intel run on different GHz 'charts', AMD is still cheaper in the long run (It was always my understanding that AMD and ATI are similar -- higher performance but slightly less stable than Intel/nVidia setups)?

re: Caviar Blue vs. Black -- I bought a Black today in hopes that a HDD replacement would fix the PC, but it didn't. They're AWESOME though.

@Ryken: Awesome build... looks like it'd save a lot of money. I'll have to keep that as a reference, as I'm getting another PC on my birthday! Woo! P.S. Thank you Pillar for the addition -- looks solid!

re: Quad-Core vs. Dual Core
That's something I'd forgotten about..! I could save a lot of cash choosing a higher-end dual core, I think, and just upgrade by next Christmas when quads are utilized more frequently.
 
too bad u just missed out on the newegg deal with a cyberpower/ibuypower pc can't remember which one.

It was pretty sick though for the price.
