Upgrade Desktop or buy new laptop?

Hello everyone. Since most of you have WAY more experience in PC's than I have, I hope you can help me out with my little situation.

I'm having trouble deciding whether I upgrade my current desktop (with have only 80G of memory but everything else is fine for me) or buying a new laptop.

Next semester I'll change to another college and probably will need a laptop at least to use it for research and the likes. I could just take my desktop with me, but obviously wont be able to use it anywhere except my apartment. Because of that I haven't bought anything for my Desktop.

I have around $1,000 that I can spare for this. As well I will get the offer from Microsoft on windows 7 for the students in just around $40, so Ill save some money there.

Any advices on what would be better? Thanks in advance

OP: XP sp 2
VC: GeForce 9800512MB
RAM: 4G (but with XP I only have 3.2G)
Power Supply: ~750 W
 
you could just get a netbook for your researching and whatnot, and use the remaining for upgrading your desktop.
 
i say get a cheap laptop then use the rest to upgrade your desktop for gaming.....the laptop for just web browsing and word and stuff like that.
 
Or you can buy the desktop and do both gaming and browsing :P (much faster I might add)
 
This is a good laptop your not wanting to run games or anything like that. And you would have about $550 left to upgrade your desktop with.
 
I'd look at a refurbed dell from the dell outlet store. You can get a Dell mini 12 netbook (perfect for writing papers and light browsing) for $260. That leaves you $740, which buys a lot of desktop these days!

Nice laptop. Yes it will be mainly for working on projects and the like, but I'm a gamer and at least I want to be able to play a decent not so demanding game if I get bored in college. That laptop seems almost perfect except for the video card. I might not know a lot in PC tech, but I know not to trust in integrated cards. Any suggestions on a low-end gaming laptop?

I though about that as well, but those mini's seems so fragile that wont last me a semester. Other than that, my hands are to big for such a small netbook :(

This is also a good laptop but is is an open box so you might be taking a risk when buying it. Here is a good review on the graphic card in it. It should be able to run most mid level games.

This is the best solution. Trust me.

I was huge into gaming, but wanted a laptop. So I got a Gateway p7805u gaming laptop. Sure it was great and handled everything like a pro, but this thing was 17" diagonal, 14lbs, and a pain in the butt to lug around everywhere. Not to mention it hogged any part of a desk I actually had.

So I resulted in selling that, building my own computer (see signature) and spending ~$300 on an HP 100mini netbook. Sure it's nowhere near as fast as my old laptop or desktop, but it's lightweight, small, and allows me to check my email, write papers, and look stuff up online. Basically all I would really need it for outside of my room.

Possibly will have to go with something like what you are saying. I'm still looking to see if I can find a normal notebook, not a mini, but if it comes down to it, seems I will have no other choice other than a mini:crying:
 
I bought a netbook and was thoroughly disappointed. Was much slower than I anticipated. Slower than my old Pentium 3 desktop to be honest.
 
Seems okay. I'd check out one in a store similar if you can.

I mean, I was going to get an ASUS EEE, then I went in the store and checked it out; the touch pad felt like a ribbed condom and drove me insane. Hence why I went with my current HP.
 
Laptop

If it's primarily for college, a desktop is not much use. Can't drag it to the library or class for that matter. Shoulda bought one from neweggs black friday sale. For a grand you coulda got a pretty nice one.
 
Meh, I'm the dumbest person ever when it comes to "upgrading" desktops... I want to upgrade mine but Idk what's good / bad. :P
