Borderlands vs. Oblivion: thoughts?

I'm thinking about getting my brother an Xbox game for Christmas this year, and I had a question about the game "Borderlands." My brother is a big, big fan of "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" and similar titles, including Mass Effect. He doesn't particularly like regular shooters, so he wouldn't like something like CoD4-2, and I don't know if he would enjoy Left 4 Dead 2, either. So, the morale of the story is, would Borderlands more than likely satisfy someone who enjoys a game like Oblivion? Any opinions are welcome.

Thanks,

Oblivion and Borderlands are very different in alot of ways. I loved Oblivion because of the story and the amount of customizations you could do in the game. Borderlands on the other hand is really loot driven game. I find Borderlands to cater more towards the Diablo/WoW fan base then it would be to Oblivion/Mass Effect/Star Wars Old Republic.

Tho Borderlands is a story driven game its story is lacking. Which makes the game "To me" a heavy loot driven game where you are always looking for the next best thing to replace what you have.

Hope this helps out some.

On a secound thought Oblivion is a loot driven game too. But the story and side quest are so vast in Oblivion that I think they make up for any faults in the game.
If he Really loves Oblivion and Mass Effect I would recommend getting Dragon Age(I have yet to play this title but I do hear so many good things about this game) over Borderlands... Even tho I really really really like Borderlands and cant wait till the xpack comes out...

Has he played fallout 3? I would think an oblivion fan would enjoy fallout 3...

you need to be into shooters to really enjoy borderlands. pretty much once you get through the game and become lvl 50 you'll be scavenging and fighting things (shooting) for better gear. it doesn't have as long as a story or even as much replay value as oblivion in the least. that is just an amazing game in general.
borderlands is great, but i think you #1 have to be a fan of shooters #2 have to be an elitist and always want the best of the best, in order to get the full experience from borderlands

Well, Borderlands is actually a very different game from Oblivion. It's more linear(unlike the TES series, you're given an objective and figure out what to do with it[both good]), is more based on shooting skills than stats and equipment, and doesn't have thousands of interesting side quests.
Fallout 3 would be a much better choice for someone who likes Oblivion, if they don't already have it. They run on the same engine!

Dragon age is much closer to oblivion than the other games i have both dragon age and oblivion and they are really similar u should get that

it is, is it?
hmm maybe once i upgrade my graphics card i'll look into grabbing dragon age up. i love oblivion

While Borderlands is a great game, it's a sort of "run-and-gun" type of FPS. It's a shooter with RPG elements tacked on (not in a negative way, mind you). This is definitely not comparable to an RPG like the Elder Scrolls series in terms of gameplay style/mechanic.

If he really enjoyed Oblivion (as I did), he'd really love Fallout 3. It has fairly deep RPG elements, a great storyline/setting, terrific voice acting, and V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) is insanely satisfying to use against enemies.

Check out Gamespot.com's great review for Fallout 3 here.

Borderlands is nothing compared to Oblivion, or Fallout 3 for that matter.

Of the three, Oblivion is almost undoubtedly the most expansive. For those not so much into that type of theme, though, Fallout 3 usually fits the bill. Both of them will provide many, many more hours of gameplay than Borderlands. Borderlands really won't net you a whole ton more gameplay than your average FPS. It's got some of the RPG elements tacked on, as has been said.

But if they're a fan of Oblivion, Fallout 3 will please much more than Borderlands.

Yeah you really can't compare Oblivion with Borderlands. Those are two way different types of games. Oblivion is great because of its theme and lush environment, and the depth of the game, and the fact that it is ultra expansive. Borderlands is, while you are free to go about it your own way, is much smaller scale than Oblivion. However, it does have a very unique feel to it, and the colorfulness of how Borderland's universe is is a breath of fresh air. To be honest before I played Borderlands, I thought it was going to be a Fallout 3 clone, and to tell you the truth I've had a blast.

I'm going to have to +1 Dragon Age just because it's a great game.

But if is a hardcore fan of Oblivion, then Fallout 3 would probably be the better option.

as far as going into the fps genre goes...borderlands is much better...but as far as going into the rpg genre goes, oblivion leans more towards that way

Can you mod Oblivion for xBox? If so get it...some of the mods are simply amazing (for pc neway)

Dragon age isn't like oblivion, Dragon Age is more old school.

Fallout 3 is much more like oblivion, but if you haven't already maybe you could get him the expansion for oblivion? I got it and got a lot of play time out of it, and its not expensive. :D

but no, borderlands isn't that much like oblivion.
