4-Way SLI

huh....thats a first, would like to see some reviews/benchmarks on that 4-way sli looks pretty epic though
 
Posted before. At least twice, maybe three times. Old news as well, why would you bother getting 4 GTX 285's at this point, when they will easily be out performed by 3 Fermi cards in Jan-Feb.
 
Heh, 4 5890s is still better. Once again, ATI wins out. Anyways, I hope the people buying this realizes that they will need at least 2 power supplies.

Not really. The 285's have a relatively low TDP(183?). 183x4 =732. Add in 130 for an i7 and you have 862W. Tack on some hard drives, some disk drives, RAM, fans, overclocking, etc, and you have maybe 1100W. Could easily be powered with an Enermax Revolution 85+ 1250W PSU(using 4 molex to 6 pin PCIe adapters--the third 6 pin isn't even needed unless extreme oc'd--so this is perfectly acceptable).
 
you can buy this for me so i can test it out for you, then i can tell you how well it works.

all i need is 4 285's and 4 5970's, and a mobo to support 4way sli and 4 way crossfire, also 2 1000w psus would be nice to power the beast

Its not about the wattage, its about the power adapters. And a molex to 6 pin needs 2 molexes, and no power suppply has more than 6 6 pins, and 6 molexes, so there's just not enough.
 
Also, think about the cooling on this. The cards are wedged together so tight, there is almost no cooling on them. They will overheat in a system like that.
 
I agree with the power thing but the cards won't overheat. A lot of people have 3 way sli - crossfire with cards wedged together like that and they all run just fine. When I used to have 2 gtx 285's, they were that close and never had a problem.

The Enermax 1250W I was just talking about has 8 6+2 pin PCIe connectors. Try researching before you tell someone that they are wrong.

75W is supplied to the card through the PCIe slot per PCIe 1.0&1.1 specs(150W is available with PCIe 2.0, but not used to maintain backwards compatibility at this point). Each 6 pin PCIe connector can also supply 75W. The cards TDP is 183, it doesn't even need all 3 PCIe connectors, as two + PCIe slot would provide it 225W of power. I'm not certain as to whether the card will work if nothing is connected, but even if it wont, you can use said molex adapters. As they wouldn't actually need to supply power, you could daisy chain, etc, just to be certain that the card has all the ground wires it needs connected, etc.

It will work with an Enermax Revolution 85+ 1250W, and possibly others.

A 5970 is (2)5870's.........im pretty sure you can't go (4)5970 that would be like Octa-fire, (8)5870's
(2)5970 is the fastest right now though which is (4)5870's and its the max you can crossfire i believe.

Also, theres no 5890 whoever said that (4)5890 were better than (4)GTX 285
 
Why does ATI get brought up in almost every thread? And a 5970 and 285 is an ignorant comparison.


Anyways...

I think it has an extra 6pin for the extreme overclockers (it would need more power, voltage, etc.)

I said that, its because thats comparing the prototype specs of the still in the works 5890, and the 285. The 5870 is also better for that matter.

And I brought up ATI, because if we're talking about nVidia finally getting 4-way SLI, then it seems fit to compare it to Crossfire, which already had 4 way available.

nobody knows if a 5890 is in the works.........they only made the 4890 to compete with the GTX 275 and fill the gap in the GPU line-up.

A 5870 competes against a GTX 295 and a 5850 competes against a GTX 285 and beats it most of the time.

Actually, they made the GTX 275 to compete with the 4890. The 275 was released after the 4890.

=/ if anything i thought they came out on the same day from what i remember.......w/e the only thing i heard about what ATI had in the works was after reading an article where they said they had something up their sleeves to counter the Fermi GPU's when they came out.....could be something like a 5890 but im gonna guess its gonna be something else and they'll probably have a different name for it
