Wife wants a netbook/laptop

Alright. So my wife has decided she wants a laptop or netbook for Christmas. But she is so cheap. She wants the cheapest one possible b/c she does not understand more times than not the cheaper it is the worse it is.

Anyone have any ideas? She is not going to be gaming on it. Only browsing the net(email, facebook, shopping). Only basic stuff for sure.



Thoughts?

For one, we have a new desktop we bought 1 year go. But now she is pregnant and wants to browse the net while eating pie on the couch!!

sounds like your pregnant wife i guess............get a netbook, you said shes only gonna be web browsing and such so she doesn't really need anything more than a netbook. Netbooks are super portable and will get the job done. Get something like a Dell Mini 10 from bestbuy or something, they're only like $200-300 and they look fairly nice to carry around. She will easily be able to browse the net and do all those things with the netbook.

Maybe she wants a cheap laptop/netbook so she can spend the money on nice Candles and stuff like u told me once before :) havn't seen u in a while man hows it going?
 
I have a HP Mini 110 and I'm fairly satisfied. The ~8hr battery life is quite appealing as well. With me being a college student and all, I can just charge it at night and I'm good for whatever the day throws at me.

I was able to get it price matched to the HP website, only because the Geek Squad person was feeling "nice". (It really was a different model, he made my day). You can upgrade the RAM up to 2gb for $50 if you truely desire. Which I plan on doing when I get the funds.

Well my dad has a netbook & ive done some work w/ it. Most netbooks come w/ the Intel Atom processor, which is plenty fast for the netbooks. Most of them come w/ Win XP Home (which I found works amazingly fast on it), but just checked on Newegg, & theres alot that comes w/ Win 7 now. Majority or all of the netbooks come w/ 1gb of memory, which is plenty. I found out that the netbooks only have 1 memory slot (due to their small size), so 2gb would most likely be overkill for such a small product. Only thing I would say to watch out for is software installed on the netbook that wants to control the wi-fi. Just make sure that Windows controls the wi-fi & you wont have an issue. I had an issue w/ that 2x. Also depending on how your income is, dont worry about your wife when it comes to the price. Spend the necessary amount of $$ for the netbook only because she should be worth spending the $$. Now mind you that she will prob wanna know how much it cost, but dont tell her. Hopefully she will accept it happily & ask no questions, but never rule that out.
 
I agree with Putty. My wife also has an HP mini.
They are pretty fast for normal browsing (though, Farmville and other flash-based games can get a bit sluggish running on high graphic setting).

As for the touch-pad; To me, the "left click" bar is a bit awkward. The upper section functions as your typical single click, but the lower does an actual double-click.

Other then that, I think it's a pretty good lil' comp. I especially like its keyboard. It feels sturdy to my finger poundings *Hulk smash purdy alphabet pushy things!* :)

I would say to go to a Bestbuy (or other store of your choice of course) and test out the little buggers (don't forget to tell the salesmen to go fly a kite first!). See if you can get a deal (hey, its the holidays and all).

You edit photos on that? With what program? I don't want to hurt my poor netbook with that heavy of a task.

What kinds of programs does thee speak of? (Examples)
 
I got one at tigerdirect.com for $399.99...they may still have one. It's an MSI I think...it's really nice.

I use GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) without running any other programs. So yeah, it can do it reliably, you just can't multitask very much with it. I think Photoshop should work pretty good as well.
