Hello fellow gamers,

For those of you who don't know what the CQ term in the title means, you will learn something new today!

The term CQ is what Amateur Radio Operators (AKA HAM Radio operators) use to open a communication on a radio frequency. Ham radio started over 100 years ago, and has led the way in numerous innovations in radio communications technology. The hobby is slowing losing motivated operators due to the advent of cell phones & the internet. Ham Radio is a piece of Americana, or i should say the entire world. There are Ham radio operators in almost every single country in the world, each with a unique callsign that they use to identify themselves over the air. I became a Ham operator this year, by studying and taking a 35 question test, and you can become a Ham too!

For more information about Ham Radio and becoming a Ham, visit the following:

I also belong to a local radio association, the South Jersey Radio Association, you can learn more about that fine group by visiting http://www.sjra.org/ and you can also search for a radio group near you!

There is this song by Shellac...i think it's on their 1000 Hurts album...that had the term CQCQCQ at the beginning of it. I've always wondered what that ment, so thanks for the info.

You're quite welcome, you learn something new everyday!!!

to add to my first post, Ham radio is a very useful tool. It can be used as a hobby, which is what most people use it for. You can even talk to the International Space Station over Ham! Ham Radio is also used for emergency communications during disasters, as cell phone towers may be out, ham radio signals will always be available.

You guys familiar with Number Stations? I find the idea that those are really secret spy talk over high frequency radio to be fascinating

Yep, that I have. Me and a friend used to drive around aimlessly while shuffling through AM stations listening for odd things. You get some weird stuff doing this, especially late at night.

Yeah, my brother and I used to play with fancy walkie-talkies and listen in on conversations with those, even that was fun :P
