Okay lets see what the general consensus of everyone out there in the tech forum. I use my laptop on a Wireless Network. I am operating at 300 Mb/s and yet I have HIGH PING a lot of the time (400-1200) so obviously its messing with my gaming. There are atleast two other computers connected to the network. I never had this problem before......sooooo I guess my question is:

What kinda programs are there out there that would be using a lot of bandwidth and causing my network connect to be so crappy and cause me so much ping???

kinda wanna focus the conversation on like AIM and stuff like that
 
Umm Firefox and IE can drag them down. I have had aim running on my laptop whilst i play on my desktop. Any downloading clients or the like could drag you down as well. Folding@home utorrent etc.
 
A program that make calcul for medical research and after send it to the main server , it may load your cpu and gpu , if youre the only one the network that getting so high ping , it might be a program who use all your ram or cpu.
 
Which is then in turn loading up your network bandwidth. If you can go into TF2 and take a pic of your netgraph and then load it we can see if its in or outbound.
 
The most common reasons for a high ping is that you might have some program running in the background, on either of the computers that leeching most of your bandwidth, you live somewhere far from the server you're trying to play on geographically or your rates are way off from of the servers. Most likely either one of the first two.
 
Folding@home only sends updates every work unit (every few hours or days) so it shouldn't be affecting your ping.

When did you notice this problem start happening and do you remember doing anything around that time that might affect it?
 
ive had occasions where xfire and other voip programs caused excessive pings :X.. not to mention any file sharing u are doing over the network between computers.. annnd what ever bandwidth they are using can still affect you b/c you all pool from that one source
 
This could be 1 of many reasons. If you have Windows Vista, try starting all your programs as an Administrator. This happend to me once and doing that fixed the problem right away.

Reset your router.

Check the other 2 computers that are running and make sure nothing is downloading/updating.

Check to see if Steam is downloading/updating anything.

your Anti virus could be scanning/ updating.

Close all backround programs such as chat clients, FTP programs, web browsers, etc.

On Windows 7, go to the start menu and type Resource Monitor (it's called Reliability Monitor in Vista iirc), then click on the network tab. It'll list all the programs that are using your network, how much data each of them is transferring, and the latency. If you see any programs using more bandwidth than your game, you know what to do :)
 
Just to ask the stupid question. Your labtop can support N right? It's not older with b/g only.

Well you could try quick tricks, first reposition where you are/where the router is. Try to put the router at a high spot. As wireless signals descend, so putting your router in the basement isn't a good idea.
Make sure someone isn't jacking your network. Neighbors are complete jerks.
 
Once my ping was 996 that was just wrong i litteraly ran in a spot and ended at the end of the map then restarted my PC and my ping was back to normal (100-200).
