ok so today i was browsing the web and went to a site from Google. Well when loading the page it froze then came back. i didnt think anything of it. So after my class was over, i opened back up my laptop and a "anti-virus" came up telling me i had 33 infections, well i never installed or downloaded this program, it was called Security Tool. So i tried to remove it by uninstalling it, the computer didnt not find it. I right clicked the icon it put on my desktop and tried scanning it. AVG wouldnt start up. so i clicked Open File location only for it to bring me to a windows folder with the shortcut in it. So franticlly i did a system restore and i dont see the icon anymore and the search bar comes up with nothing and im am nopt getting the random alerts anymore. Does that mean it is completely gone? i want to know if it left a small file that wasnt deleted and can still be harmful. Google it if ya havent heard of it.

also is this a good anti-spyware program and is the site trust-able?

Try booting in safe mode and doing multiple system scans with several different programs. Other than that I'm completely lost with you.
 
AVAST never let me down, give that one a shot in safe mode. Its free and very very user friendly and wont annoy you like Norton or mcafee.
 
And while your there check your start menu folder,They can sometimes install files that mess your computer up when u start it
 
.... I had a similar.. virus.. after testing out a progie... ended up having to do a full install.. never could get my antiviruses to work even in safe mode.. spybot S&D and HiJack this couldnt even get rid of it. >.< gl
 
I sounds like you or someone else clicked "OK" to one of those web popups that say, "Scanning your system. . . .You're infected! Click here to install"

To be honest, I'd backup any data you can't live without, and format then reinstall. My guess is it used a rootkit or other method of getting into the hooks of the OS, and that even if you get it out, you will have odd behavior from the lobotomy you'll have to preform on your computer.

However, I hope safemode works, it does sometimes.

I, personally, have invested in an external harddrive and gotten in the habit of saving all my data there. They are massive these days, and that allows me to reinstall my OS and applications without worrying too much about what is being lost.

If you do format, remember to save the following to a CD (not a USB device!):
Motherboard Drivers (to get those USB ports working).
Ethernet Card Drivers (to get to the Internet and get the other drivers).

well see, the issue was my pc froze when browsing the web, no links or popups came up. Just froze than i saw that i had this fake program on their. I did a system restore and my scanners are working spybot, mcafee found nothing and AVG is starting the scan (i forgot and left it paused >.<) i did a system search and came up with nothing, i checked the folder where the shortcut was and it was gone. i did a start search and nothing was found. so im guessing it is gone. ill do the safe mode thing.

restart ur computer
install norton antivirus 360
and scan ur computer
 
so i did the safe mode thing AVG found nothing and my pc hasnt been acting weird. My accounts dont seem to have been hacked so im guessing the system restore did the trick.
