yo ok guys, its been like 2 years since i build my system and im starting to notice the littel things... slowing down of the system and ect. I HAVE A PC win xp. and need some ADVICE on what i should buy to upgrade my system? any ideas?

The two areas I would upgrade is your RAM and your vid card. I would recommend a minimum of 2 GB of DDR400 RAM and a nVidea 7800 or 7900 series AGP card. If you have additional money to spend, upgrade to a large flat screen. 20-22 inch fast refresh (5-8ms) screens run under $350 and are great for gaming.

First quesiton, I see that you have 1GB of actuall physical RAM. What are you doing that you are using so much of it currently? Windows XP usually runs on 130MB or less. I wonder if you have software slowing you down, or perhaps have not restarted in weeks?

Also - maybe I missed somehting as it is late, but what type of RAM was it, and is it ultra low latency?

Was the 80GB hard drive Sata or IED? RPM? (why only 80?)

Power supply wattage?

CPU socket 754 amd athlon 64
hard drive : WD caviar 80gb EIDE HD 7200/8mb/ata-100 ( dident have $$$ for a bigger one at the time)

I download alot of torrent files , once in a while i use the MSCONFIG command to have an overview of what starts up when i turn the computer on

the RAM cant find the box right now but its KINGSTON ram 1gig ( my mobo supports 2 gigs but at time dident have money for another gig ... if i find out mroe info about ram will post it here
 
There is a big difference between performance RAM and kingston Value RAM. So were you torenting at the time of the test? I hope you dont do that durring game play.

It sucks that you have socket 754 (although I owned a socket 939 once, so - yeah early adoption sucks sometimes). I really dont understand the socket 754, it seemed like the only reason they made it was to have a socket that wouldnt upgrade well later :p

You can probably find tons of opterons and perhaps not many athlons with that socket, but I havnt looked ni a while.

all upgrades you consitter will definately still depend on your power supply. I probably wouldnt go too extravogent on anything though, as your computer will bottleneck quickly. I think you can get away with a newer vid card - (the 7900 will be better than the rest of your system), new processor (if you can find one) RAM, hard drive if wanted, and powersupply if needed - but the truth is, for a little more money you can get a new motherboard and solve all the problems at the same time.
 
got ya i think the power supply it atx 400 watts but dam i would probably have to open up the computer and see cause i totally forgot, about the ram ya its kingston but i remember talking it over with the guy when i was buying it, and its the best kind of kingston i could get for gaming again im gonna try adn find out what it really is
 
"the guy"? You will need to get a power supply bigger than 400watts depending on the video card you upgrade to. ...

What has worked for me in the past is format and reinstall windows fresh. Install firefox, openoffice and other usefull programs - sell the computer to someone and then buy a whole new system and built it yourself. Otherwise, if you just upgrade what would you do with the older parts?
