the i5
I've heard and read reviews that it overclocks like a beast

not much difference really. I'd look at motherboard prices and go from there.

Depends on what you're running with.

If you wanna run SLI, get the I5 because I don't think they make SLI AM3 motherboards yet.

The PII 965 is at the top of its upgrade path. The i5 750 is at the bottom, with greater potential for future upgradability. I'd pick the i5, don't even have to think about this one.

^ same.

I like AMD alot, but if I had the choice to chose Intel for the same price, I wouldn't even think about it.

yup i5 750 all the way.....also clock for clock im pretty sure intel is faster too so when you get the i5 750 up to like 4.0ghz its gonna own

Please, show me the benchmarks that have the i5 "owning" the 965. I beg you, please.

The truth of the matter is, for gaming, they are identical. For video/graphics production, the i5 presents an edge.

Also, if you think 1156 is a better future upgrade socket over AM3 you haven't done your reading...

Ryken speaks the truth!

I would go with the Phenom II. Socket AM3 is AMD's newest socket type, so when AMD releases new processors they most likely going to be for AM3 sockets. The i5 is an 1156 socket type was created because the i7 (1366) was un-affordable. Any new Intel CPUs will most likely come out for the 1366 socket size.

I am an Intel person, but if I were buying a new CPU at this point I would definitely switch to AMD and grab a Phenom II on the AM3 socket.

Do you have any proof of any of this, or is this just your intuition at work?

Why? The PII holds no advantages, the i5 does.

I simply couldn't recommend a top-of-the line PII over a bottom-of-the-line i5. The PII holds no advantages, the i5 does. The PII has only a speculative upgrade path, the i5 already has up to an i7 870 and is at least promising. If you know something about the AM3, please, do tell, because no one else seems to.

I didn't say the i5 750 owning the 965..........i said when you overclock it to 4.0ghz it owns

I saw the article/benchmarks a while ago, ill try to find it if i can.........the i5 750 showed some noticeable advantages over the 965 though at 4.0ghz not in everything but is some/a good amount.

Yes i know in real world gaming the 965 performs on par with a i5 750 while in some games the i5 750 has a pretty big lead.

heres an example of the i5 750 getting a hefty gain in FPS over the 965 in Microsoft flight simulator while in Call of Duty they are all on par no matter what clock.

To be perfectly honest, if I was you I would wait 2 or 3 months and see where things are heading. I don't think now is a good time to buy a processor. What is your current build?

i would also like to know what your current build is. i prefer AMD personally, and i like that if you already have an am2+ mobo you won't need to immediately buy a new mobo in order to run your processor.
sorry but intel changes sockets like i change socks...i would also stick with am3 because it will be around (for further upgrades) for a long time, great processor, great price, backwards compatible and ya....

i wouldn't worry about the future upgradability for the processor for like i5 to i7 or whatever, because if you're seriously going to buy an i7 in a couple months, why buy an i5 now. probably shouldn't use that as a reason

even better i'd save a few bucks and get a phenom ii x4 955be and overclock it either to what you were with the 965 or to 965 base speeds. save yourself 30 bucks

but junk you never change your socks....

i do agree that intel likes their socket changes like i like my chocolate milk

personally i think instead of coming out with better processors for their current 1366 or whatever it is socket, they'll keep i7s the top of the line and now change socket etc. so if anybody wanted to upgrade from their i7s they'll have to again upgrade mobos. its just how intel rolls

hell i just noticed that the i5 and i7 are different socket types...what a freaking rip off. i didn't notice before because i didn't pay attention to intels new line this time around. also just for comparison, for me to get a phenom ii x4 965 it would cost approx 229.99 CND and i could use it without getting a mobo, then when i want i can buy an am3 fx/gx790 with sb750 (one of the best overclockers for amd) and appropriate ram when ready. however to get an i5 it would cost me about the same 229.99 CND however i would also need to spend at least 150 on a new mobo right away and then ram also.
this is just demonstrating how unfortunate it is for me to upgrade with intel, since i already have an am2+ motherboard and can slowly upgrade better with amd without breaking the bank in one go

lol u just realized that??

its all about the architecture of the chip though. The LGA 1156 chips have a built in graphics controller or something, they continue the P55 trend or watever and do CFX/SLI in x8/x8 and the LGA 1366 continue the X58 trend and do x16/x16........basically low end/high end

Intel does like to change sockets but these sockets won't be changed/outdated for a couple of years more. The LGA 1366 is wat like 1 1/2 years old now?

The i9 are coming out soon but those are gonna be super high end costing around $1000....they come out sometime in the beginning of next year

see exactly, the i7s will be the top of the line for a long time, however AMD has so much room for improvement with am3 socket as well as a price buffer. their highest price processor is only 200 bucks, man they could easily work on something better than the i7 920s and between i9 performance for like 300-400 bucks

however i was doing a lot of research regarding HT links on mobos/cpus etc and crap and i don't see a reason to hit am3 quite yet, for myself, because i don't need ddr3 memory (and it hardly performs better in games if you have quick ddr2 timings). so i am just going to get myself a 955 BE and overclock the balls out of it and stick with my current mobo, but get 4 gb of ram when i get windows 7

Personally I'm going with a PII X2 for both me and my wife's computers coupled with DDR3 1600. For the simple reason that AMD CPU's are cheaper then Intel's in the mid-range market and they provide damn near the same performance as Intel.

Everyone has their own preference on what they like.
