AMD Phenom II 965BE vs. Intel Core i5 750

Here's my current setup, and what I'm planning to upgrade to:

Current:

Core 2 Duo e6600 (OC to 3.2Ghz)
eVGA 680i SLI motherboard
Corsair XMS2 4x1GB PC2 6400 DDR2
eVGA 9800 GTX+

Proposed upgrade:

AMD Phenom II X4 965be
GIGABYTE UD3H AM3 790GX: Link to newegg
G.Skill 2x2GB DDR3 PC3 12800 (DDR3 1600)
Radeon HD 5870 or 5850

That's what I'm thinking about doing right now.

Looks nice.

looks the same to what i would like to have, but i think im going to have a 955 and just overclock more, and asus m4a78-e with 4 gb of ddr2 ram, probably 1066 if i can find good enough timings, along with a 5850

im just double checking right now, seeing if the integrated graphics on the mobo can hybrid crossfire with a 5850, because that would rock.
edit: damn it won't, hybrid crossfire is only available for very old cards...booourns

hybrid CFX has always sucked and only works with low end cards (3450/4350 etc.)

Looks good. If you don't mind overclocking just a bit, go for the 955. It is $165 with free shipping, and it is the 125W version. The 125W 965 is $195 and the 140W is $185. Save the $20-30 as you can make up the difference very easily with a small OC.

Do you have any proof of any of this, or is this just your intuition at work?

For starters, AMD processors are backwards compatible and AMDs socket path is pretty clear.. AM2, AM2+, AM3..... AM3+ possibly? Also, proof of Intel coming out with new processors for the 1366 can be found here. Socket 1156 will not have support for the new i9.

Why? The PII holds no advantages, the i5 does..

The Phenom II might not hold any advantage over the i5, but the future of AM3 looks to me like it does.

Can read some more opinions over there. Honestly, I'd build one of each and see where the prices come out. If they are within $10-15 I'd go i5 because you will be able to squeeze a tad more performance out of it, and it will draw a bit less power.

Otherwise, the AM3 will be more upgradeable down the line, and you won't notice a lick of difference in any game situation between the two.

I dunno if at all possible id wait until next year, i know that intel is releasing a 6 core processor and ive heard amd is releasing one as well which is also supposed to be a AM3 socket proc.
If moneys an issue, the athlon II's can overclock well and get pretty close to the performance of PII's, and can end up saving lots of $$.
To be truthful, i would wait for the next gen processor(s) but pick up the mobo & ram soon, based on whether or not you want to go for Intel or AMD. ;)

If AMD 6 core processor is gonna be AM3 then by all mean go with it......im pretty sure a 6 core will beat a 4 core i5 750

As of now though from these 2 options, the i5 750 would be my choice and its faster clock for clock

intel i9 are coming out beginning next year and will be expensive, around $1000 i think

yeah, i guess i would go with the i5, but again it seems if your are going to dish out 2/3 the money for an i7, it makes sense to get way more bang for your buck, also 1366 some mobos are going down in price a bit.

People can't wait forever for computer upgrades. Computers change rapidly, just do your research, find what you want and get it. In 5 years AM3 will be old school.

I run the 955 BE Phenom II x4 right now OC'd to 3.85 ghz at air cooling... very stable... I dont want to mess with water cooling, but my friend has the identical setup as me with his processor on water cooling above 4 ghz. Not bad at all in my opinion.

I just pulled the trigger and ordered a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Here's what I got:

Phenom II X4 965be (125w)
Gigabyte UD3H 790GX motherboard
G.Skill 2x2GB PC3 12800 DDR3 1600 memory

Hopefully it will be here later this week. I can't wait!!!

Actually, it was officially announced today that it will be called the i7 980X. Pity, I liked i9 better.

And yeah, most likely $999, possibly more.

yea....i9 sounded fancier, way too expensive tho for the average gamer :(

As for the AMD, hope your happy with it.....and yea try overclocking it to like 4.0ghz or something
