so i need a graphics card that can run GTA4 good right now i have a raedon 4670 with a excellent power supply (dont remeber what it was but i know its good!)

and I need one that can run gta 4 on medium quality with not to much lag!

it seems the biggest concern is CPU power. apparently according to THIS article they had the same graphic performance with a 9800 gt than they did with a gtx 280. even changing the resolution did not bump graphics (meaning its a cpu bottleneck). also it sounds like in that article anytime they try to overclock an AMD cpu, the game doesn't boot (kind of like what i had with steam when i overclocked, no longer an issue however).
so what is your CPU? I'd suggest quad core with the fastest mhz possible, apparently

they suggest a vid card with 1 gb of vram, but a fast fast CPU, check THIS out

You need at least 512mb of vram to run it on medium, and over that for high, pretty much what the other guys said.

I run GTA IV with the following set up:

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 4870 512MB

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0ghz

RAM: 4GB (2 x 2GB) of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800

OS: Windows 7 64-bit Professional

I can run most all settings maxed out, but I think the area that can offer the most improvement in how the game runs is CPU strength. I would recommend that you buy at least a high-end Core 2 Duo (3.0ghz +), if not a Core 2 Quad. Of course, depending on your budget, you should try to go for an i7 (but that would require buying a compatible motherboard and RAM).

CPU power/performance is the most heavily demanded hardware on GTA IV, in my opinion.

I saw you thread title and thought "WOW thats a paradox"

GTA4 is really a CPU demanding game, GPUs help, but the best you could do is to get a beast of a quad core CPU

GTA4 is a horrible console port, that means that they basically copy pasted the code for the xbawks version onto a dvd for pc. As a result it is poorly optimized for PC's and runs very slow

I don't agree with you here.

While GTA IV on PC does seem quite demanding (graphics, performance-wise), it feels a lot more polished, in my opinion, than the console counterparts (I first bought the game for Xbox 360, then bought the PC version).

Plus, you can totally mod the PC version.

The shadows on the game look stupid.

They're all pixelated and look just...weird.

Your gonna need a good CPU to GTAIV well as others have stated its a very cpu demanding game. So something along the lines of Best duo core and mid-high end quad cores i guess. As for GPU anything along the lines of 4870, 5750 5770, GTX 280, 275 ect try to get the 1gig versions

I wasn't implying it was a bad game at all, i was just saying that the code is horribly inefficient. I agree that it is a very fun game, if your computer can handle it.

they released a patch that enables gta4 to have AA enabled, and it looks soooo much better. except now a 5870 gets like 20 fps with it.
it obviously isn't ideal for the PC, it was ported poorly because its too much of a resource hog for what you get
