Hey, just hoping for help with my computer.

My computer is now so slow it is unusable, once iv turned it on every operation(even very small tasks) i make freezes repeatably or just doesn't happen.

Someone times it works smoothly if i leave it for 2 hours or so but
recently this doesn't work either because going in to sleep mode is to much work for it.

Unfortunately i do not know the specs about my computer (Sorry) apart from it being under a year old and from what i can describe "A gaming computer". Also i did try and install that list of handy programs, but as you can imagine Firefox went into a Not Responding fit.

I have contemplated a virus but have had F-Secure for a while and do regular scans which come up with nothing.

I have had addwere for while however but i didn't know how to remove it and it wasn't much of a problem so i left it.

So i finish with a plea for help on my brothers laptop.
I need my computer for work play, and EC events.

Thanks

P.S i must stress that now it does not do ANY tasks. Not even right clicking.

Just a few questions to help us out:

1) What version of Windows are you running?

2) Does the entire machine lock up or just certain programs? i.e. Can your mouse still move?

3) Have you installed any new hardware recently?

4) Does it also display the same behavior in safe mode?

click on start, click on run, type dxdiag and tell us everything it says there, that will help. and ya make sure your harddrive is nearly completely full, that does slow it down a LOT. i would also scan with numerous programs for spyware and malware

prolly loaded with spyware

you could scan and remove some of it but the best solution would be to wipe it out and reinstall windows again

Oh yes and thanks for the help guys.

1) What version of Windows are you running?
Vista.
2) Does the entire machine lock up or just certain programs? i.e. Can your mouse still move?
All the time. I test to see if its frozen by left clicking.
3) Have you installed any new hardware recently?
No. Its been a steady decline.
4) Does it also display the same behavior in safe mode?
Haven't tried. I will do though.

You need to do safe mode, scan for mal-ware, viruses, spyware etc. Im sure thats the logical problem solver but it could be do to your hard drive failing as well (although unlikely). Do you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled on your hard drive as well?

Safe mode is faster and I'm going to try scan for virus ect. And can iask what is S.M.A.R.T?

Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. It is designed to let you know before your hard drive dies so you have some time to back up your data.

I would suggest a scan with Spybot Search & Destroy to rid yourself of any malicious software on your computer.

I just finished a F-Secure Scan for Malware that came up with nothing. Windows defends is still scanning. Is this enough or should i still do that spybot thing?

Also just finished windows defender scan(Which scanned more items) Found nothing, even though i KNOW i have add-ware

I think Spybot works better than Windows Defender. Couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

I have never heard of F-Secure myself, so right on the bat I disqualify that product as being enough to scan for malware or viruses.

These 3 software products are the mainstream used for malware/spyware(no specific order):
Spybot Search & Destory
Malwarebytes
Ad-Aware

These are some of the most widely used anti-virus products(no specific order):
Norton
McAfee
AVG
Avast
Avira

Is your computer slow in the CPU,ram,HD read/write, or all across the board slow? Need to view look at your performance montior for awhile. You can set it to log specific things.

If the ram is completely full all the time it could be bad memory or tons of malware/spyware/viruses that are taking up your system memory. Could also be tons of autoupdating software starting up trying to do its thing at the same time. If its CPU usage being maxed out all then again its malware of some kind. If it is HD usage it could be heavy virtual memory due to high system memory usage. You never want to fill a HD primary system OS HD beyond 2/3's full. The OS will eventually start auto compressing itself to make more room.

In the ram processes if anything is over say 90,000 K that isn't the system kernal or IE I would question why it is being ran in the first place. Most normal operation processing are anywhere around 16 K to 5,000 K. System Kernal can range anywhere from 50,000 to sometimes over 100,000.

It wouldn't hurt to run a memory diag on your computer to make sure the ram isn't going bad. Usually you would see a window saying your system memory has change or memory address errors when your getting mad memory.

Uninstalling unused software wouldnt hurt either and defraging.
