The main thing to remember with memory prices is what the manufacturers are making. DDR2 was very cheap not too long ago because it was the primary memory type being manufactured. Now more manufacturers are switching their primary production over to ddr3, and not producing as much ddr2, causing ddr3's prices to fall while ddr2's rise. You may recall the same thing happening when ddr took the market from pc-133. PC-133 became horrendously expensive while ddr cost very little.
I would recommend you go for the ddr3 if you want to have upgrade ability in the future. It probably will take a few years before you can't find any ddr2 at decent prices, but ddr3 will likely continue to drop in price until a new standard comes around.
