Good Day, I am making this thread to discuss and answer questions pertaining to O/C.
**DISCLAIMER: ANYTIME YOU OVERCLOCK HARDWARE PAST THE RECOMMENDED MANUFACTURERS LIMITS YOU RISK DAMAGING HARDWARE. EDGEGAMERS ORGANIZATION, NOR MYSELF ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU MAY MAKE TO YOUR HARDWARE**
A little history on myself in the realm of O/C started on a AMD k5 486 x86 proc that ran 33mhz, On a system with 16mb ram.. I still have this cpu and ram in a box upstairs haha.. I wanted to play the latest Flight Simulator and a newly released game called Quake and my current system was having issues. After doing some tinkering I had that proc oc'd to 71mhz and thus began my bang for buck quest in life. I purchased my first 3d card, a voodoo to run on the back side of my s3 savage 2d card and again started fooling around with clock speeds. I am mainly a AMD/ATI buff, having written a number of articles for Toms and other internet outlets as well as handling Q/A for many gaming communities. Many times allowing users whos pcs otherwise do not run a specific game well or at all to do so.
On that I want to officially open this to any questions pertaining to Overclocking and welcome other users who have solid advice and experience to share.
Software:
First and foremost when getting into the realm of O/C make sure you have the latest drivers and BIOS updates for your hardware. I will make a section below with links to popular developers. Beyond this I recommend having a good array of applications to monitor your temperatures, clocks and faults. I will also list below links to applications I personally use and recommend for these uses.
Drivers: This will cover the 4 major players in the market, within these 4 sites you should be able to find drivers for just about every Motherboard/Chipset, Videocard, and specific processor drivers on the market.
www.amd.com
www.intel.com
www.nvidia.com
www.ati.com <-forwards you to amd's ati site
Applications: This is a list of recommended applications for monitoring hardware, stress testing, overclocking itself, and benchmarking your scores.
CPU-Z <- This allows you to monitor your clock speeds, memory timings, as well as gather information about your current hardware.
WPCREDIT <- For hacking the CPU-NB Speed
Systool <- Great overall O/C utility for enthusiasts
AMD Overdrive <- For a AMD User this is where its at. This allows you to monitor temperatures, adjust clocks and timings, and stress test in one application.
AMD Fusion <- This slick little app shuts down unneeded services to streamline your pc for gaming. If you are running an amd based 770+ chipset it will also overclock your pc based on a 10% profile.
Prime95 <- One of the most used stress testing utils in the world. You can load up multiple cores at one time and put them through their worst.
3DMark 06 <- Overall great util for benchmarking your system.
More to come on this thread shortly! In my next update I will start to cover the basics of overclocking your cpu and how to circumvent heat with a good cooling system.
