XBox 360 "Open Tray Error" And Unable to Read Disc.

Hey, for Christmas I got three, brand new XBox games. So happy, I run upstairs, fire up my XBox, then put the disc in. But, what happens? It says theres no disc inside. I go balistic, as nothing worked to fix it. I tried blowing inside, in the vents, different discs, nothing.

So, I open and close the tray. It starts reading, is just to start up, my eyes gonna glow, then, BAM Unable to read disc. So, me knowing me, I go balistic again. I try everything to fix it again, but nothing.

So, what I'm trying to put out here is, how do I repair such fails from Microsoft? I can't send it in, my Warranty is void and I don't wanna bother spending all the money I got for Christmas.

I don't want to use canned air, as it can damage the inside. I don't want to mess around with it, as in taking the case off then trying to "Dust" It off, but apparently that's my only option.

But, knowing the smart people in Edgegamers, I thought I'd post here. Any ideas? I think this is hopeless.

Hello Awptimus,

I searched for a solution to your problem and found that this seems to help:

1. Open tray
2. Unplug power cable while tray is open
3. Plug in power cable
4. Power on console - tray closes
5. Open tray
6. Insert disc
7. Try your game

Thanks, I'll try it then get back to you.

It could be that the sensor in the disc tray is faulty. Causing it to not read anything.

Call Microsoft, if its under a year old they will fix it for free. If its not and its under three years old, well call them anyway tell them it does that and gets the 3 rings of death and they will fix it. I'm not telling you to lie but(I am) but, you need to stretch the truth so yeah.

Thanks both of you, but we've decided to get it repaired at EBGames, if that doesn't work we're returning it to Microsoft.

I don't know if I'm replying to this properly but I can't believe how many people out there are suffering from the same problem. How old is your XBox? My son's XBox is having exactly the same problem - with new games he had for Christmas and now with old games too. Not only are there lots of people having this problem but many seem to be just out of warranty - just like ours, by one or two months - and it just happens out of the blue. I also can't believe how many people are happy to just pay up to get it fixed. If every one of us called Microsoft to order instead of just paying up!!!!! We had a PS2 for about 5-6 years maybe longer and not one single problem. The amount of problems experienced with X-Box - RRoD and now the "Open Tray" Error, even people having 2-3 replacement XBoxes. My first port of call will be the shop I purchased it from armed with the Sale of Goods/Fit for purpose Act (being out of warranty), although I won't hold my breath. Will contact Microsoft but certainly won't hold my breath there either. Will contact the credit card company althought I don't really see why they should have to pay out. We certainly can't afford to have it repaired. With the world and his wife suffering with the same problems Microsoft should be held accountable followed by the stores happily selling consoles with known problems - google it and you will see it has been around for a LONG time.

I wonder what wonderful company makes this console that has the highest failure rate? What other hardware/software does this company make? Do their other products fail like this too? Many questions!!!

Either way you look at these two articles, the xbox 360 has the highest failure rate of all current-gen consoles (PS3, Wii). I recall reading another article that said the failure rate was 80% (still looking for it)

I would believe that it has an 80% failure rate. They pushed it into production way too fast. They needed to test it more.

Its hit or miss with Microsoft. The Zune was a good hit. Vista, not so much. Windows 7 was a hit. Xbox 360 bit of a miss.

Why does mac use Microsoft Office?? I want that question answered but thats another post. Lets not bash companies.
