Kill Me

Hi guys. Just a slight thing that I wanted to know how to do. Ok so, sometimes my computer would freeze up & make it impossible to open up Task Manager until it unfreezes, which can be never. I want to know how to make it so that Task Manager can be opened no matter what. I remember there was a screen in XP, Vista, & 7 that always pops up no matter what if you press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. It's a little different in Windows XP (what I'm currently using) but I know for sure that it's possible but I just don't remember how to get it back that way.

For example, when I press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, Task Manager will open up directly (if computer is not frozen). I want it so that it'll look like this, but in WINDOWS XP:

I know for sure that this is possible on Windows XP but here's the other thing. I found on this website that you can do just what I was looking for. (See the first reply by "joelena" on that link) However, when I tried to go what it says in that reply, I get this:

It says that if I disable "Use the Welcome screen," it'll require me to type in a "user account name" every time I log onto my computer. I don't want to have to type in an account name every time. I just want to click on my account icon, type in my password, & be logged in. Please help!

PS: This is a very long thing I typed up so whoever actually took the time to read the entire thing, thank you.

hey kill me, ever heard the saying, "cant always have your cake & eat it too"? well hate 2 say it, but it applies here. unless theres a new coding about this that i havent heard of, its either you do user account name (which requires you to put in a password) & login, or u just straight login automatically. theres really no shortcuts around that. thats just the way microsoft has their security. i hope this answers your question. i do apologize that i couldnt have been of better help.

Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Local Security Policy

Local Policies => Security Options

Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name (enable/disable)
Interactive Logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL (enable/disable)

Then uncheck those 2 boxes you took a screenshot of and that should do it :D

Edit: You can't go straight to task manager but this method ^ works nicely. If something freezes CTRL+ALT+DEL to get priority taken away from it then hit task manager button and Bing Bang Boom you baleetd it

The security policy changes allow you to not have to type your username in every time, just your password. And why not add CTRL+ALT+DEL in there too?

In XP, if the "Welcome Screen" is enabled, then Ctrl+Alt+Del should take you straight to the Task Manager.

Are you saying it's not?

Hmm, is there a way to uncheck "use the welcome screen" but still have "fast switch" enabled? I actually use the fast switch (Switch Users) option a lot so this would be a loss.

It is possible using 3rd party programs, but I wouldn't recommend doing this. (For example Novell bypasses the windows login screen all together and uses it's own, and it would allow fast user switching)

Not recommended. Plus I hate Novell
