Windows 7 - sound change

I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 last night, installed/updated all the drivers the upgrade did automatically.

However, I've lost my 3D sound. It's not dynamic, and mostly all sounds are flat. I had 3D sound by default with Vista.

At the same time, now when I restart/shutdown, my speakers "pop" each time shuts down. (Popping also occured only after the Upgrade lastnight)

Any help?

Sounds like basic drivers. I would check windows update for an update and also go into control panel and then the sound settings and verify it's set to 5.1 speakers or headphones or whatever type of speakers you are using.

All windows updates have been installed. It's set to 2 speakers, and thats the only option that I I have. I'm not sure if thats what I used before the upgrade or not. It says 2-high definition audio device, default device.

Manually update your audio drivers. I know that Windows Default Drivers aren't the best but work until you can update them.

I went to the HP site and installed the sound driver specific to my laptop.

But now, sound doesn't work. The sound thing says no speakers/headphones plugged in.

However, my Hardware and Sound in control panel lists the speakers with a green checkmark (which looks familiar to what I had before). It lets me go to properties, but not Configure.
The popping no longer occurs at shutdown, but neither does any other sound.
Properties says that the device/driver are working properly.

EDIT: Troubleshooting says the audio device is disabled.

If you install the drivers from HP it should also install some software to go along with the driver. (ie. Realtek HD Audio manager) And it should show up in the task tray by the time. If you see any program related to audio there try to open it and make sure all the options in there look correct and see if it detects the headphones/speakers. Also, sometimes HP will have mutliple audio drivers listed under your model, so you might have to look through the drivers page for your laptop and test the different audio drivers until one works properly.
