Yesterday I downloaded fraps to see how it was and to see if I wanted to buy it. I started Portal because I get good fps in Portal (between 120-200). I stated recording with fraps and my fps drops from 160 to 10 and stays below 20 the rest of the time I was recording. Does anyone know why this is happening? I set fraps to record at 30fps and 60fps but i get the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.

System:
Abit AN78GS motherboard AM2 AM2+
AMD Phenom Tri core processor at 2.7GHz
5GB Corsair memory
PNY Nvidia 9800gt Energy Efficient Version
480W power supply

I don't know why this would be happening, but for me whenever I run Fraps, it lags because my computer is rendering the game (in your case, Portal) and also recording it.

Since are trying to record in a source game, I suggest you use the built in record feature in the Source Engine.

Here's a two-piece tutorial:

FRAPS usually slows down a game when you are recording. It's a common problem everyone has. Like Pickle said, just use the in-game record feature of the source engine.

You could also go to the options menu in fraps for videos, and you'll see that there's several FPS options you can tick on, and one with a blank box you can fill in.
If you click that box you can type in 80 or whatever you want to have when you record.
This way if you record your fraps will never lower your fps down to less than 80.
(so basically what you did with the options but then entering it manually, for me that always works for some reason.)
Hope this helps
