Alrite.......Im debating if i should upgrade my CPU cooling

Im current running a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz with load temps around 60C

I was debating if i should buy a Corsair H50 with a push/pull fan configuration or a Noctua NH-D14
I am mainly thinking about upgrading is because i want to get my CPU to 4.0ghz or around that with safe temps......currently not possible with my OCZ Vendetta 2, the temps become too high

I know the Noctua NH-D14 will give the best performance but will it be worth the extra money over the Corsair H50??
The Noctua will cost around $93 and the Corsair around $78 after shipping

I basically want to achieve around 4.0ghz on my Q6600 with reasonable temps as my current CPU cooler doesn't allow that to happen

air is only goin to get you so far, i dont know if the h50 could do it either, you might want to look into real water cooling if you want 4+GHz

True but have you read about the Noctua NH-D14??? the thing is ridiculous.....it keeps i7 920 @ 4.0ghz around 60C load

Im really leaning towards it now after doing more research

I can do water-cooling cuz my uncle has a sick setup he can sell me but i don't want to be hassled with it....too much maintenance for me, thats y i looked into the all in one no maintenance kits

Ill probably get the Noctua most likely.......Are temps on a Q6600 generally higher than an i7 920?? or does the i7 920 produce higher temps than a Q6600?? im thinking the i7 920 produces higher temps even tho its 45nm versus the 65nm Q6600 G0

45nm=less heat than 65nm

i would think that the i7 makes less heat

and yes that noctua is insane...

if your uncle knows watercooling i would get that... can i have your uncle?

what wattage and voltage are the q6600 and i7 920s rated at? temps are mainly based on the power input, so the higher the voltage the higher the temp, the higher the wattage the higher the temp

hmmm not sure.....i guess i7 920 makes less heat than a Q6600 then cuz im pretty sure it runs at a lower voltage and such

You should probably go with the Noctua.
Well, it depends on your set up. Read below VV

I myself am thinking about getting the H50 simply because of the set up of my computer;
The rear fan is taking in the cold air from outside, and having the H50, it would cool it to insane temps knowing my ridiculous stock air temps.

The newer Venomous X by Thermalright in prelim tests has already dethroned the Mega's, and is still cheaper than the Noctua

I personally do not like Noctua, their products are much too overpriced in my opinion in comparison to Prolimatech / Thermalright

I'd either grab a Megahalem or a Venomous-X Pewpew, I'm running on a True and am not looking back ^^

Also, the h50 is a nice cooler, but remember it matches the Mega's and True's on many occasions, only beating them here and there, they trade blows back and forth, It IS much neater (Less space taken) than the Air coolers it rivals, but for that neatness you also run the risk of leaking (although extremely low chance) they have been proven to leak, check the Corsair Forums if you have any doubts.

Condensed version: Get a Megahalem or a Venomous-X, Noctua is overpriced for its performance. :)

Just my extremely long two cents ^^

yes i've looked at the venomous-x and i am extremely interested in it considering its the real successor to the TRUE......i have not seen any reviews on it yet or anything and its been out for a while now i believe...would you care to show some data/graphs?? also it doesn't come with fans if im not mistaken?

Also, something that didnt cross my mind before, be sure you have the clearance for your ram if you do decide to grab the Noctua, it is really quite large ;)

Soopah fast edit: the Venomous x Does not come with fans, those you need to grab yourself...

wow that guy has the unreleased Gulftown processor.........the intel 6 core!!! beast haha
as for the venomous-X.....pretty nice, will need to wait for some real reviews and benchmark comparisons for me to make my decision, the whole being able to twist and pressure thing is interesting and looks cool

Im a bit confused about the pressure thing, the more pressure u put on the processor the better the temps???

ok uhh are you even able to keep your motherboard upright with those huge ass coolers on there - seriously.
those things are all too big for my case =( i have a max of approx 135mm. can't find too many great air coolers for that, and even if you can find one it'll be a very very tight fit....so i think im kinda stuck personally

haha, this why you should get a full tower atx case
Although, my full tower Cosmos s has a great deal of difficulty fitting in most large coolers because of the huge side-case fan. :cursing:

yea thats a bit of a shame..........i kinda would expect a case like the Cosmos to fit large coolers, im sure it can fit large coolers but it's prob just a real tight fit

Im happy with my HAF 932 :) the 230mm side panel fan doesn't get in the way because the CPU is located above it where the window is so it gives a lot more clearance for CPU coolers

see i am an avid desktop gamer, but i don't like the huge ass bulky expensive cases. im happy with my centurion 590 and its big enough. i'll probably just end up getting the h50, i think i can justify it since i saved money by unlocking the cores on my 550 so now i don't need to buy a quad core

haha k.......get from newegg $77 + free shipping and add another fan to it for push/pull

push pull for exhaust or intake. there was a review that stated 1x fan for intake was better than 2x exhaust.
what i could probably do is hook it to the intake fan on my side panel and booyah, instant greatness. would just be more of a pain to take my side panel off but i don't do it that often. im trying to think of what would be the best way to set it up. but ya newegg.ca doesn't even have it, and by ordering it in the states i need to pay dues on it to cross the border

edit: you can't even ship to canada from newegg.com can you? to calculate shipping (even tho it states free shipping) it only asks for zip, not postal codes - funny...maybe then newegg.ca should have the same stock

oddly......corsair recommend you mount the radiator/fan on the H50 as an intake, so basically you get rid of your back exhaust fan and put the H50 radiator/fan as an intake and then add another fan onto the radiator as a pull so all the air is coming into your case generally

There have been tests that show this proves better for H50 cooler and yields better performance but disrupts the cooling inside your case cuz you should really be using it as exhaust but now ur using it as intake and bringing air into the case disrupting air flow

i really don't see it being too much of a disturbance. having 2 intake in the front, 1 exhaust on the back and 2 on the top and 2 intake on the sides.....just making that one exhaust on the back to be an intake with the rad attached should still route air in the middle and ultimately routing it out the top pretty easily.

so basically

edit: my diagram didn't work because these forums do not register spaces on their own - awesome

is what my case would look like. if its too much of a problem you could turn your intake from the front into exhaust even...just to keep the side to side flow but ya, its been reported to be more effective with an intake fan bringing cold air to the rad, so its probably best to set it up that way regardless of the fan you attach it to

sorry to butt in this thread but i have a question,
can the h50 be mounted on any 120mm fan mounts? if so i might just slap one on my case door at one point or another, the stock amd cooler in this computer needs to go but i dont have the money to do that atm.
