A look back, curious thought and discussion.

What i personally think is this...since ive also played since before any updates...yes the game has certainly changed...for better for worse? It all depends on the situation..so yeah the game is entirely situational depending on your gaming style

The updates just add spice

I just started playing earlier this year, so the first update I saw was the scout update. I can kind of tell what you mean; it does seem like the game would be entirely different without the unlocks and I remember reading about it before the unlocks came out and thinking of how awesome it would be if I had a computer decent enough to play this.

Overall, I don't mind having the extra weapons, but it is irksome how they tend to defeat the purpose of the classes. For example, I like using the huntsman, but it does ruin the feeling of being a sniper (which is saying a lot considering how bad I am with the rifle). On the other hand, there are things like the cloak and dagger, which allows spies to really SPY on the enemy team (not that anyone uses it for that >_>)

So there are definitely good and bad, but I suppose overall I lean toward unlocks being good just to keep everyone playing (but they shouldn't be the only thing).

the only class that needed an update was a medic imo, game was fine before updates

i really use none of the updated weapons except for the Razorback in pub games

The whole thing is still a convoluted game of rock paper scissors. People are just mad that you can change one class which used to be a rock to be scissors to another class's paper.

I'm scared. And I don't know why.

Then read and be enlightened.

Every class is made with weaknesses that can be exploited by another class, right? Let's take the classic sniper/spy/pyro troika.

With the original equipment:

  1. Snipers can kill pyros from across the map, but generally fall prey to spies.
  2. Spies can kill snipers, but fall prey to pyros.
  3. Pyros can kill spies, but get killed at long range by snipers.
Spies are scissors, pyros are rock, and snipers are paper.

Unlocks changed the roles of these classes. Jarate, huntsman, and the razorback makes snipers more able to kill spies. Dead Ringer, Cloak and Dagger, and Ambassador makes spies more able to kill pyros. Pyros... kinda got screwed, no big shifts in paradigm.

This makes snipers like scissors and rock, spies like scissors and paper and pyros like a rock and possibly a bit like paper due to the flaregun.
Spies and Snipers can fill two roles depending on the unlocks they use while pyros just become more of their role.

So what makes people mad about unlocks is that they're so used to either filling one role or being immune to another role, that they're upset that the roles can change. One class can change weaknesses and strengths to fill another role that a class used to own by itself. They need to embrace the unlocks and begin exploring the role dynamics that these changes bring about.

I have to admit, I really liked it prior to the unlocks. It's still a good time, though.

Yeah, the game is so much different now, I wish they would've left it alone and worked on Episode 3 instead.

Thanks for all the responses guys! It's awesome to read what you all have to say.

opscomm-They have been working on episode 3, they have a separate development team that works on it. TF2 group works on TF2 and HL2 guys on HL2, usually that's how it works.

Lance-Good points, I would add just how the team is playing as a whole, and how each person is using the unlocks for the advantage of their team and not for themselves as a much more primary reason as to how the game was before, and now. If players still play as a team, even with updates nothing has really changed. (apart from OP situations :P)

So if Spies, Snipers, and Pyros are Rock, Paper, and Scissors; that must mean I should shoot.
Pew pew pew. I win.

It is a valid point you have there thereven, but some contributions are just too powerful to keeping a certain balance between classes and weapons.

For example take that pickaxe, honestly that thing is probably the best weapon I've seen in this game, I lived one of the blows of that thing, all the other times I was just instant killed. Even if the soldier was at 100hp... that thing just crits forever I think ... Weapons got to be balanced that one should not be supreme over the other.

it is like if the eyelander was allowed to get random criticals, then it would be kind of equal to the pickup
