Any links sent to you over steam containing:
  • The word "FREE"
  • The word "GAMES"
  • The word "ITEMS"
  • Offering a special deal for something steam related
  • Asking you to join a forum
  • A website link to a .tk website

These, along with many other things are most likely tied into a phishing website. Even clicking on the link could compromise your account.

What is phishing? From Wikipedia:
In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public

In Steam / Gamer speak:
Someone is trying to take your steam login information to take your account over.

How can you avoid being phished?:
Don't click any website links over steam. Even if it is a close friend you can trust, dont click a website link from them. Ask them in ventrilo if they solely sent you the link, and if they say yes you know its safe.

Also look into "Email Verification" by steam as another line of defense:

So in short: DO NOT CLICK WEBSITE LINKS OVER STEAM

Thank you for reposting this, it is important we all read and understand due to the sudden outbreak of lost accounts. Be careful out there folks.

thanks for posting legend :D
there are just some sad people out there.

ya... this is actually a good post. a friend of mine recently had his steam account hacked into and the person that started using it got it vac banned. So by the time that my friend got back online, he couldn't play any steam game online. STAY HACKER FREE!!!

I was victim to this... but i came back with a fast pass change :D!!! Ive seen so many ppl do this to me and my friends. Its gone too far.

Also any friends that send you links that are suspicious and not obvious like Google or Microsoft. Then dont click it, this is because most likely their account has been compromised.

Thanks for this free post about how to keep my games and other items safe Legend!

IT is always good to post that kind of information oftenly since phising is still a very active form of piracy.

Thank you

thanks for the post I've been a victim of this in the past, not fun :(

<--- is a victim of this latest attack. Because it was sent from one of my close friends I didn't think anything of it. I am hoping to get my account back before something bad happens to it. I'm still waiting on a reply from the Steam support team :(

Uh Oh, that sounds bad. Damn this is a good account of how it can get anyone.

I would recommend that everyone switch to an alternative browser like FireFox or Google Chrome, it'll prevent a lot of headaches plus they all run a lot better than IE.

Hope you get your account back soon.
