What Application do you use?

Do you use Photoshop CS4 CS3 7.0 8.0?
or GIMP?
Which one is free? and is it worth buying?

Gimp is free and does almost as much as CS3.


I prefer CS3 though.

I use GIMP. I have used CS4 before, and theres not too much difference. GIMP once got lawsuited by Photoshop for being to similar I believe.

Theres no difference between GIMP and Photoshop. Photoshop just has most of the things possible when image manipulation built into the program itself, in contrast to GIMP, which you can usually find from different GIMP related websites, or a user created script.

But, I will tell you a secret. If you are new to making signatures/custom images, you will not get a full understanding and will probably end up with an image that you may not feel comfortable with. Switching to another program will not change this. Read tutorials, get tips, practice.

Tutorials do help. You're probably jumping into one that requires more understanding of the program.
