Props to whoever guesses what it is for...

INB4 someone says that graphics card is awful, where's the OS(I'll be using Linux), etc, I KNOW!

Oh, I'll be getting the i7 920 from Microcenter, for $230. And I have $100 EVGA bucks, so I will be buying the motherboard from them.

So, knock $160 off the total price...

Oh shoot, left out the PSU, that'll be the Corsair 400CX for another $40.

I have that same processor and ram combination, works great.

I recommend the Corsair H50 as your cpu cooler however.

Sorry, but the NH-D14 outperforms the H50 by quite a margin. Not to mention this will be running case-less, so I'd have no where to put the rad lol.

Want to get 4.2Ghz+ out of the i7 920, which the H50 is not as likely to do as the Noctua.

I have an idea what it's for, but the HDD is throwing me off... hmmm

Im guessing some kind of server or rig for your mom? Server is more likely.

More guesses: folding?(You dont need windows to fold, or much hdd space, or a powerfull video card, all you need it a powerfull proc)

Bingo. Will be running bigadv work units, and will pull upwards of 25,000 PPD.

WOOT i win

Why not get a win GPU then you could fold even more?

Money?

Also, Why 6gb of ram? Is it really needed for folding?

Edit: Why you run caseless?

To save money. If I were to get an expensive GPU to fold on, I would need a more powerful power supply, as well as a copy of windows(running GPU's folding under Linux is a PITA).

For running -bigadv work units, .5Gb per core is required and .75 per core is recommended(i7 = 8 logical cores).

Why waste money on a case when it's just going to sit on a shelf in my closet?;)

For some reason people don't like that CPU cooler.

I love it.

It's close to the best air cooling you can have right now, if not the best.

People don't like it because its a big as your head.

I would get it if I had the money.

Rofl, so the new build for a dad, I got the same processor, motherboard, and RAM. I was about to get the same CPU cooler but decided to go with a cheaper one instead.

my dads running the zalman cnps 9900 and ive got the noctuna and i get around 8c idle and almost 12 on load. were both running a 965. I gotta say im really impressed with the noctuna and its fairly quiet. just got done gaming after 2 hours and the proc is running at 37c. my case has 9 fans tho so that might help a smidge

I thought a case might help with airflow so that your cpu would be cooler (and you could get a higher oc)
