Lol i'm totally a GIMPer. I've never used photoshop in my life and GIMP works fine for me... only a month ago i learned about brushes and now I download new ones all the time (the splatters like in my sig got very repetitive)

GIMP is truly a wonderful program.. i've always wondered how it compares so well to photoshop and yet is free...

it compares so well because it is an image editor made by editors and designers. like most open-soruce projects the listen very closely to the community.

I use GIMP to make pretty much all my own images; really the only thing holding me back isn't the program, as I know how to use most features, but my overall art skill. If you don't know anything about "real world" art you can only go so far with virtual stuff.

I use Paint.net, its worse but i like being able to see what is in each of my layers. unless i dont have gimp set up right so i cant see whats in the layers? halp?

you can open the layers window in GIMP by pressing Ctrl+L
and I think that'll let you do whatever you're talking about doing with layers.
