Major computer lag

I keep getting major computer lag spikes whenever I play any game. I just got a new hard drive so I figure that that could not be the problem so I was just wondering if anyone could have a solution for me.
DELL INSPIRON E1505 (Laptop)

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz (2 CPUs)
RAM: 2046MB
HDD: 250G
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
Sound Card: SigmaTel Audio
OS: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3

And this lag happens when I run any game I play. It will run smoothly for 5 - 10 minutes then all of a sudden :cursing: LAG!

what type of lag, graphical, or internet lag. low fps or you teleport everywhere and everybody else glitches around

Ok because you're on a laptop you shouldn't be expecting much specially with only 1.66 dual core. Heating could be part of your problem if when it sets into its load that it begins to heat and lag. I suggest playing on hard surface without any fabric or padding under your computers heatsinks/fans. If this doesn't not help at all enable net graph in the game by typing "net_graph 1" (without quotes) into console. And then attach a screen shot to show us your fps and network read outs. This is to confirm what kind of lag it is.

its a low fps lag. for example, when i play DOD:S i usually get a 30 - 50 fps depending on where on the map i am. When the lag hits it says i have 9 fps but i know that is lower than it says it is. A few months ago i never had this problem before so its a relatively new problem that ive been having.

Have you tried Checking the Processes tab to see whats running up the CPU? If anything other than DOD:S is using up a lot, you might want to have a look at that. The other thing you could try is turning down all the graphical settings to min and seeing how it plays then

This is probably a heat issue like Tom said. When the CPU, GPU or memory heat up too much they'll underclock themselves to try and cool down. This is called "throttling" and obviously it reduces performance. It's happening now because you've probably had a build-up of dust or other particles. Fire some compressed air into the vents. It's important for a laptop to throttle otherwise your case would start warping and the machine would eventually die. Get a small little fan and point it directly at some of the exhaust slots for whichever component you think is heating up the most, which is probably GPU.

i think that might b it. Cuz a while ago i got a message saying that the graphics card stop running normaly so i just shut down my pc. Do you know anywhere i can buy a low price laptop fan?

Look for a notebook cooler there, tray is a good bet. I owned a Dell XPS M170 and it started overheating also. Eventually, it burned out the wireless card so you really don't want to skimp on cooling. You'll get more fps, better performance and extend the life of your laptop.

Yes i'm going ask/beg you not to continue trying to run games until you vent the machine correctly, and also going to say as an added precaution/idea. Clean out your machine. It could be so simple as there so much fuzz in there its heating up the whole system. Good luck.
