There are a number of bands or artists worthy of this title in my opinion.
Some include;
Beck
Block Party
Clipse
Justice
Daft Punk
Jay-Z
Nas
Modest Mouse
the list can run much longer.
I am not the type of person who listens to one form of music. I tend to do some looking and find the good stuff in any genre.
I choose to base my decision on not only the artist themselves but their impact on popular music and their impact on their genre.
For this reason I have to pick the one, the only Kanye West, Yeezy.
It was in the year 2001 when Kanye began to leave his mark in the hip hop world. Having produced much of Jay-Z's The Blueprint album the world became aware of the mans unique style of music production. Since that time Kanye West has released 3 critically acclaimed albums, College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation. His most recent album 808's and Heartbreak was a step in a new direction, illustrating his ability to diversify.
Some might say that his ego is his only downside, which I take as a legitimate point, but i would also argue that it was his ego and drive that has gotten him this far.
Sure he's a jerk, sure he's pretentious, sure he says some really stupid things. But it is impossible to deny that the man has a distinct ear for music. His influence in the hip hop genre has made him one of the top producers of our time ranking with others like Just Blaze and Timbaland.
