Best Anti-Virus software

I need to upgrade my anti virus, as mcafee isn't doing the job.So I was wondering what your opinion on the best I could get is. Preferably for free , off the internet. Thanks.

i'd go with Norton Antivirus. In my Opnion i've used it and its good might slow the comp alittle but otherwise its one of the best out there.

I personally use Symantec Corporate Edition. Note Symantic is the professional name of the Nortan Brand and is alot better than Nortan

yea i would go with AVG. or nothing at all. in all seriousness i have never used a firewall or antivirus other than avg or the ones that come with vista and xp. they worked fine for me. but if your into all that limewire stuff then you might need it.

ok um wow you guys. Please NEver ever reccommend someone to not get antivirus. That is just rediculous.

Second - there is no antivirus that comes with windows XP or Vista. For the last time people - UAC is not antivirus, and neither is windows defender. If you dont have antivirus then you just dont know that you have a virus untill you go to do somehting and it doesnt work. OR you will neevr know - that your computer is spaming thousands of people like me with Viagra emails because your computer is being used as part of a botnet.

It is slowing your computer down, your files may be being corrupted, and someone could be watching everything you do, stealing your passwords and you would be none the wiser.

Maybe you dont do homework on your computer, no paper or projects, no business documents or credit card information - just games. Well you know what? thats fine, everybody has the choice to do what they want and I respect that you have that freedom.

But telling others that they dont need antivirus is just a blatent falacy.

Oh and P.S. - if you have no AV and think you are virus free - go to a LAN and play some games with people. See how happy they are when they infected by you because it is easier to tranfer viruses to friends through LANs and games because the game ports are often open allowing a path inside your computer.

This makes me so frustrated that i am beyond ranting. I mean, like 5 years ago the statistic was somehting like 45 seconds. It took 45 seconds being connected to cable internet with no AV and no firewall to get spyware or a virus. When the computer was idle. I have no idea how that statistic stands to day but hey - good luck with that guys.

I would take a hard look at an antivirus system called Avast. I have it, and its working great.

The absolute best is Kaspersky. This is based on personal experience as well as reading reviews in PC Mag, PC World, as well as online forums. Norton 360 is the next best thing. Norton Anti-virus is a joke as I had FIFTEEN trojans that it didn't find and Kaspersky found all of them

Just because you have AVG or Norton or whatever.. doesn't mean you can't / don't have a virus.

100% of viruses are the users fault, whether it be not protecting your ports, opening a virus infected document, connecting to an unsecure network, etc etc.

So if you open a file with a virus before scanning it...good luck to you. You can only hate the player not the game.

Defenitely it is true that you can get tons of viruses even if you have anti virus protection. I definately never said otherwise.

However, I will disagree with you that 100% of viruses are the users fault. This might just be our seperate opinions, but I would agree with you if the ONLY WAY to get a virus was to "mess up" and do somehting stupid. But that is just not true. I mean, gosh - go buy a sony DVD or game and if you install it to play it then you get the sony brand root kit. Perhaps you could argue that it was stupid to buy a sony products,... i might have to give that one to you too
however, if you dont connect to unsafe networks, dont open unsafe files folder or programs, and also dont protect every port then here is a list of things you can also - not do:

pirate music
buy music legally
pirate porn
download porn legally
read webcomics
watch youtube
use google
visit this website
read digg
read slashdot
go to bash.org
visit any website
play DOD
play TF2
play any games online
share homework between computers
store music, movies, or files on cd / usbkey / external hd
---> (because you can then never re plug it back into the computer again)
send or recieve email
update your antivirus defenitions
update windows
connect to wireless router
connect to the internet
install any programs whatsoever (who can you really trust?)

Thanks for the input guys, the problem seems to have gone (an internet hi-jacker), will look into some of these if the problem re-occurs. I agree with the fact that norton is useless, infact alot of these programs are. I currently have Mcafee and wouldn't reccomened it, on the other hand others may have had good expiriences with these.

As a more advanced computer user than most people, I feel that active anti-virus software is a waste of time, money, good hair, etc. I do quick HijackThis scans and a few other things every once in a while to check for anomalies. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way.

What you say IS true.

But in a detached way... everything IS the user. Like... say... WinRot (slow deterioration of Windows by means of programs continually modifying registry).... thats a result of you installing too many programs. Or buying a PC that already have virsuses on it. Although its not your fault the viruses are there... you could have not bought it.


So yes.... you have a very valid point. I agree. But in a way its all the user also. *shrugs*.... I VOTE FOR TEH LINUX

saying that it is the user fault is like saying that getting cancer is a persons fault because they decided to live.

Remember that there was a time before computer viruses existed. You could do anything with your copmuter and never get a virus or mal ware. you were just using your computer they it was meant to be sued - much like driving your car. Then suddenly bad people decided to start being crap faces and putting viruses on things. Explain to me again how that is the computer users fault?

Again by your theory - ithe computer user is to blame if they even turn the darn thing on. Yeah, sorry, but that is not right. Just as easily people could start buysing old safe volvos and ramm every car they see on theh ighway. Will it then by the average persons fault they were ramed because they chose to drive to work? no of course not.

By the way - it is totally your fault that you got shot in a random muggin ,.. i mean, you chose to leave your house and to be alive. cmon people


also - SED jones, like i said before it will only take one time of losing a giant important school paper or work project that you cannot recover for you to change your tune.

Back to all seriousness. Just get a router or something. They sell LinkSys at Wal-Mart cheap. Can't do any better than a hardware firewall.

yeah but shut_em most people don't know how to use highjack this to go through their registry and find stuff...and if you don't know what you're doing it can seriously screw up your computer.

and Spann firewalls are the first line of defense against viruses. they stop a lot but they don't catch everything.

and on another note McAfee and Windows Live OneCare are the two worst AV programs money can buy.

and guys there are a lot of viruses that attack your computer just by you connecting to the internet. like this newer one that is called a ZLOB virus (no not related to the porn string of zlob viruses) it finds you as soon as you connect to the web.

and just as important as a good AV program is good anti-spyware. i recommend Ad-Aware SE in conjunction w/Spybot: Search and Destroy. both are free
