Well...I am really torn up about this...Microsoft has announced that Windows 2000 will no longer be supported as of July 13 2010. It probably was and still is my fav Windows, heck any OS ever made.

I've never had any problems with it...and it saved me BIG TIME when I had Vista (I am still using it as my back-up OS)....Now I'm running out of time.

Since I've got Windows 7 I doubt I'll need a back-up system but...it's always nice to have one. I am not installing XP ever cause it's about as reliable as ME was.

Seriously, you had problems with XP? I ran it over 3 computers for years and it never gave me problems

I had 2000 for 10 years...no problems not 1 BSOD in that time NOT 1! But when I had XP for a week....I probably got 2 BSOD's every 10 hours...it was horrible.

First of all you can still use 2000 as a backup, they just won't be giving you anymore updates is all.

WinME was horrible, I don't know what the heck Microsoft was on at the time but they should be shot for that distro. I got a BSOD almost every single day.

I have been using WinXP since 2002 and have NEVER once seen a BSOD on any of the 32bit packages. I used home edition for awhile, then had a corporate version (don't ask) then got Pro and have been using it ever since. Let me reiterate, NO BSOD's EVER.

It might have been SP1 or prior that was messed up, I don't remember getting many errors though. SP2 has been good to me for years though. Never got SP3, didn't wanna risk it lol

as stated you'll still be able to use it you just won't get any more updates for it

ME had reliability issues, sure, but it was very innovative from the OS perspective. It took the best from NT and the best from 98 and turned it into a unique product. If you'll recall, this was the first OS with remote desktop without having to mess with installing terminal services. It was when Plug N Play, System File Protection, Automatic Updates, and System Restore were introduced as well. Msconfig came back with ME, it was taken out of 2000, and that was one of the best decisions MS ever made to me. I missed that little utility so much I actually added it to my 2000 ISOs. Sure, it had problems, but some of those features being around were a proving ground for them to be released in XP. I, for one, am glad that ME came around when it did.

Now, back to the OP. Like everyone else has said, you can continue to use 2000, you just won't get any high priority security updates. The other updates have been gone for a while now. At this point though, you're 3 OSes behind. I think it's time to start moving forward. Also, please don't let one bad experience with a version of Windows shade your entire view of the product. XP was a wonderful, flexible, easily maintainable OS. But that's just the opinion of someone who has installed and configured it several thousand times. ;)

I was born into win 98 (i wasn't old enough to understand pc's when win 95 was around) we never upgraded our home pc until win xp came along, i really wish i could have seen 2000 or ME. I feel robbed.
