According to several websites the i7 980x is going to have 6 cores, 12 threads, 32nm technology and a base clock of 3.33ghz.

I'm guessing this cpu is going to be extremely hot so watercooling will most likely be required for overclocking, but with an already high clock and it being unlocked (due to it being an Extreme version) there will be a lot more people able to have 5.0ghz+

The only draw back? $1k (or there abouts)

Socket LGA 1366, only will need a bios update after it is released.

If you want more information google search "core i7 980x"

So, who is going to buy this in March when it is supposedly going to release? If my finances don't change I will probably buy it the second a bios update for it comes out

the current GPUs are now being a bottleneck to even the current i7 920s so why spend so much on this cpu? hope it isn't for gaming but for something extreme that can have a chance of utilizing that much power. plus 6 cores? things are just starting to utilize 4....i'll think about getting this or amds variant when programs use 6 cores on a regular basis and when gpu power is up to snuff with it too.
basically 3-4 years

Somewhat old news, but I don't recall seeing it posted here. Anyways, the specs have been official for a while. I will not pick one up, I'd rather get two Xeon 5xxx's and put two of them in EVGA's dual socket 1366 board for just a little bit more than a single i7 980x.

16 threads > 12

indeed +1

atleast the $1k is more justifiable now rather than something like an i7 975 or i7 965 extreme CPUS........they were the same just better batch and unlocked multipliers, but nothing that really justified the $1k price tag over the cheaper options

Why not put 2x 980x's?

12 cpus > 8
24 threads > 16

Because you can get two i7 920 equivalent Xeon's for less than $400 a piece, making for a total of $800 on CPU's. The Xeon equivalent of the 980X will be $1000+ each, making for $2000+ on CPU's. More than twice the price. If I could afford that, I would, but I can't.

That motherboard isnt made for I7's, you would not get the same performance if you put 2 I7s in it instead of Xeons.

It's not that there would be a performance difference if you put i7's in it, it just wouldn't work.

But why spend so much now? Intel has their next line of chips for next year so by December the mainstream Nehalem's will be fully replaced by Lynnfield.
The 980x supposedly runs really cool because of the 32nm but it will sell for about $1000. I would personally also go with two i7's on a dual socket motherboard.

This one does.:scared:

eh, maybe once 6 core procs go mainstream i'd consider one, but for now it's not really that useful

Do you think it's going to be like when the quads first came out? And the MoBo's were bottle-necking them with their low FSB's? Or something? Or do you just want a better price

quads just started becoming necessary like 2008-2009. so within 2-3 years probably we'll see these being mainstream and necessary....otherwise its just bragging rights right now. but by the time you can utilize its power there will be better 6 core cpus on the market for much cheaper

LoL even though I know I shouldn't get one, because it is excessive and I dont need it, I will read a few reviews then find a way of talking myself into buying one. :)

That's the spirit!

the price is the issue. right now a quad with the same clocks will get you about the same in every application, because 6 core apps aren'r main stream yet.

$300 quad> $1000 6core with 2 useless cores.

the i7 980x is gonna be an insane overclocker though.........leaked benchmarks of it show the person getting like 4.6ghz on it or even capable of more. Probably because its 32nm and such.

Hmmm so 6 cores at around 5GHz each..... so around 30GHz all together... O.o
