Linux

Saying vista is bad for gaming is one thing, saying its worse than linux is another, seeing your computer specs I would say it can run vista really well, while I am a mac user and not a fan at all of windows, saying it can't game is just simply incorrect. Linux is not really a gaming type of system, most games only support components that only windows have to offer. I have put Vista, XP, and windows 7 on my computer below, while vista was undoubtedly the worse of the 3 it was still compatible with any game I used. If you really don't like vista consider Upgrading to Windows 7 or downgrading to xp. Oh and I can't advocate windows while not giving the mac thing too, so try putting hackintosh or getting a mac to if you want. (that last sentence really isn't for your situation but as a mac user I have to.)

Windows 95? Ok I can say with out A doubt that vista is better than 95.....2000 most stable windows release in many people's eyes, still xp is really good not to old, but it works well.

windows XP or in my opinion Windows 7, which is much better then XP. As for Linux... most game developers do not develop games for any version of Linux.

EDIT**: googled it and I suppose you could play counterstrike on linux--not sure what games you want to play, you'd have to google each specific game... like i said.. just get windows

it is possible to play a lot of games on linux but you would need to use wine which is a windows api emulation app.

so it would take a lot of messing around and would never run perfect.

just stick with what you have or grab windows seven.

most linux distros are still very good operating systems i run linux on my laptop and my main desktop and on 3 servers openSuSE on all of them but if your just gameing there is no point and linux works drastically different from a windows system so there would be a big learning curve.

.....What?

Vista had terrible support for software and drivers when it was released. It's fine now... Stop saying "VISTA SUCKS!!!!1111" if you haven't recently used it.

Skip XP, skip Vista, and get Windows 7. Reliable, good for gaming, etc.

If you have your heart set on Linux, it really doesn't matter what distro you choose. If your specs are good enough (if you bought a PC within the last 3-odd years, they will be) then choose any modern distro such as Ubuntu, and run Steam and other games through Wine.

However, it's typically hit-and-miss; some games will work, some won't. Do your research before taking the leap and installing Linux. The last thing you want would be formatting your drive and installing Linux only to find out your favourite game doesn't work on it.

windows 7 isnt reliable, it has crashed one me sevral times, even on a clean install im just going to stay with XP iits reliable

um, i doubt that im a computer tech at a computer store, i do these things thousands and thousands of times i doubt if done anything wrong
