Ok this is really weird. I went to go install Windows 95 on a partition on my computer. It read the disk and installed no problems. But when I want go and install Windows 98, it says it can't find drivers for my CD drive....yet I don't even have a CD-drive, I have a DVD drive. Windows XP, NT, 2000, Vista and Ubuntu seem to do all the same thing.

Help?

EDIT: To be more exact here is what each OS does:
98: Says "No drivers detected for Aptai CD-ROM Aborting Installation" (I don't have that drive)
NT 4.0: Just gives me a screen of blue hearts and lines....
XP, 2000, Vista, Ubuntu: all same as 98...no joke

No as far as I know, NT, XP, 2000 and VIsta are all NOT based off of DOS like 98 is....so my other question is, Why the heck is it giving me this in a very DOS looking way?

and what do you mean by a dos looking way do you mean the CLI?

it seems like you got an weird dvd drive that is lacking drivers.

try an other linux distro that dosnt have crap hardware support maybe opensuse or just try the knoppix live cd.

and system specs would be nice and maybe searching for your spefice dvd drive and read reviews or issues others have had.

could you also try putting in an other dvd or cd drive to do the install and trying sorting out the buggy one once you have a working operating system on the computer.

hope some of this helps.

and lol im surprised you got 95 working on newer hardware iv tried before for the hell of it and i could not getting working natively on my computer olny with a virtual machine in virtualbox.

I could see windows 95/98 and maybe even 2K, not being able to recognize a SATA DVD-rom if that is the case....

My DVD drive is a TSST corp CD/DVDW SH-s182M ATA Drive.

The drivers for it are from 2005, but I can't seem to find a place to download any drivers for it. Anyone know where I can get some?

Obtain the file ATAPI.SYS This is the driver for ALL ATAPI-class optical drives.

It can be downloaded here among other places.

Put it on your boot disk with MSCDEX.exe. I assume you know how to make a boot disk.

Add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS on the boot disk:

Code:
device=A:ATAPI.SYS

Add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT:

Code:
MSCDEX.exe /D:IDECD001

The D: in the above line being the letter you want the CDROM to use. You now have an ATAPI boot disk. It will boot any CDROM that adheres to the ATAPI standard, which should be all CDROMs these days.

I hope this helps you. If you have any trouble, please let me know.

Ok HUGE fail here...but whats a boot disk? Do you mean the CD that you use to boot into setup?

And I didn't understand a single word. (Well almost nothing)

k I officially feel old

Agreed. Wow. Remember 48 floppies to install Win95? ;)

I mean a 3.5" Floppy Disk drive ;) If your motherboard doesn't support it, you can grab a LaCie drive. They're about $20 most places.

Yeah I have a floppy drive....but whats up with these .sys files and MSCDEX.exe?....and how do I make a boot disk?

the is a checkbox in windows that you can tick off when formating a floppy to make it a boot floppy

if your playing games and using newer software why do you want 95 or 98 hell for compatibly with games and new apps, linux or mac with wine will work better than 95 or 98 and wine is far from perfect.
