there have been recent discussions about making ones own video of your amazing 'skilz', but most seem to hit a brick wall at the making your amazing demo into something usable not any more!

first you will need Fraps virtual dub(or your own preferred video editor)

OK you've just got that most epic of kills the "I shot Hammer in the butt" shot but now you don't know how to share this hilarious video with everyone else well once you have those tools above its very very simple.

First you will need to minimise insurgency (or any game for that matter) and run fraps.

you should find out the hot keys for starting a recording and stopping one (F9 by default) you may also wish to change the FPS and other settings under the "movies" tab in Fraps.

Once you have that configured your almost ready to go, time to open up INS in console(go options> keyboard >advanced>developers console) type "playdemo ####" where the #### is the name of your demo. You will then face the wait while your PC reads and loads the file once that's done (may take a few minutes) hit F9, kick your feet out and watch the killing at the end just hit F9 again and your video half way there!

Now you need to exit out of game and navigate to Virtual dub from here on your work really is your own, to load your video go file open video then navigate to your fraps folder (by default you may change saving locations in the movies tab) now you can play it through noting down what parts you want and which you wish to remove then go ahead and cut till your heart is content.

VDub can be a little fickle if you are new to video editing (like me) there is no obvious cut tools but don't worry.
if you want to select a section to cut

press the one on the right and move too the end of the section you wish to cut out and hit delete.

To slow down the FPS go to video and then frame rate and pick one you like, whether that's up from the original or down. how ever be warned the audio will not sync if you mess with the frame rate.

Then save it as you wish with any effects you have made and head to Youtube (i hope you don't need a guide for that as well!)

Now leave it uploading and have a few mugs of coffee and some bacon to bring back all that energy expened on video capture and editing.

I've wanted to make videos for a while. Unfortunately the sound fraps picks up is less than adequate on my computer. I think it might be that I still use onboard sound. Need to buy a good sound card man.

Source recorder is built into the source engine. Load a demo, pause it using the Demo Playback UI (Shift + F2) then open console and type:

startmovie <name of movie>.avi avi

The reason you put the extra avi in after .avi is that it will bring up a menu to let you choose the codec that you want to record it with. If you don't it will make it completely uncompressed, and will save the movie to your game folder as thousands of .tga files and a .wav file and you'd have to add them into your video editor from there. Though if you're using virtual dub it will let you add it tons of .tga files anway.

Anyway once you've got that sorted, the console will display a message that says something like, "Movie will start recording upong closing console." Close the console and unpause the demo.
If when it's recording, the demo plays ridiculously slow and the sound is really slow and jittery: Don't worry, it's supposed to do that. That being said it will now take ages to record lengthy demos.

When you're done recording, open console again and type:

endmovie It will tell you when it's saved.

Go back into your game directory and it should have the .avi file that you just recorded.
I've been able to make a few avi files doing this. Though tbh if you can get fraps to record sound fine in the first place I'd recommend that. Using source to record avi files, I've had nothing but problems. I either make avi files that video editors and media players can't render or decode (even using CCCP and the like), or the video quality turns out fine, but I seem to have no sound. No idea what's going on there. Anyway hope that helps you.
