windows 7 upgrade = super laggy

i updated to windows 7 from xp and when i tried playing games like tf2 and crysis i lag alot and the games are unplayable, i tried lowering the settings and still lots of lag. My specs are Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz\ 2x1g ddr2 1006\ Hd 4850 512. Before when i had xp and dx9 i could play crysis on high with AA and it would run with 30-40 fps, tf2 i had everything maxed out and i NEVER lagged at all, now i cant even play a game on like medium settings. Any idea as to what it could be? Could it be my memory? is there any way to specifically diagnose that?
 
Lag has nothing to do with the laptop specs. Do you mean you've got Network lag. i.e your ping spikes, is constantly high/choke is high etc. or that the game is choppy graphically
 
Try updating all of your graphics drivers. Also, when you're playing, open up task manager and see if anything else is running the CPU high
 
i have updated to the latest drivers, im running 64 bit and i also made sure i have 64 drivers. system idle is taking up 1.2g which is kinda normal which is why im thinking 2g of memory may be the problem... idk i also experience a huge hang up when right when i load a level and getting from the loading screen to the game. also when shutting down games.
 
You wouldnt have Aero running would you? If you are you might want to turn it off, and i meant when you're running the game, check the processes list and see if the CPU is doing a lot of work on another process
 
i dont have aero and when i alt tab to see what cpu is doing its doing nothin, is that normal? its like at 1% usage if i just let it sit at desktop with like tf2 tabbed
 
Clean out your laptop and re-install your games. The emulator system that 7 uses still has some bugs with games and Steam.
 
I experienced some of this from the upgrade from vista to w7.


WAs just drivers, get them updated.
 
also with only 2 gb of ram you most likely will be running a little laggy with windows and processes in general if your copy is 64 bit
i noticed a performance decrease going from xp to win 7 64 bit with 2gb of ram, then when i got 4 gb everything was spic and span again
 
Windows 7 requires 2 gigs of ram to run 64 bit 32 bit is only 1 gig of ram if your running the 64 bit then you need to upgrade your ram.
